When we were newly engaged (got engaged in November) it was just before Christmas and I was having a heck of time dealing with wedding venues and pre Christmas stress. My Fiance decided it was a good time to rearrange our laundry room, including putting the washing machine on the wrong side of the dryer door, building a shelf that was too high for me and cutting the concrete floor to see how deep it goes. Water also was leaking all over the floor when I started doing laundry after he went to bed and it was running into a saw that he still had plugged in. It put me over the edge.

Bless him for being handy but i totally lost it on the poor guy, I mean totally.

My husband has been remodeling our house for over a year now.  You’re lucky it’s just one project he’s doing!

@MrsLongcoatPeacoat:  Nope, he’s not a contractor, just really handy.  (He’s a mechanic.)  Originally he was working on it with his dad, but then his dad passed away so he’s doing it solo now.  Our two car garage is a workshop with tools and saws and all kinds of stuff.

First was the demolition work, which took foreeeever…

  • Rip out all the carpet
  • Take out all linoleum and tile flooring
  • Remove and replace baseboard
  • Take out tile counters/backsplash in the kitchen
  • Install new kitchen appliances
  • Completely gut 2.5 bathrooms
  • Take out popcorn ceiling throughout the house
  • Take out all the windows, reframe and replace (professionals did this)
  • Reframe all interior door frames
  • Replace entry door and redo framing and windows
  • Repaint walls, ceiling, new doors
  • Replace light fixtures

There’s probably more stuff that I’m forgetting….

@JoJo Bananas: didn’t you just want to move out while he was doing it and move back in when it was done.

The basement will be a full on project but I doubt much will get done til after the wedding.

@satsumaflower: Construction started last May.  We were not living in the house.  We moved in Thanksgiving weekend, after the critical stuff was done and he’s continuing to work while we live in the house.

@JoJo Bananas: that would make life easier for sure.

At least ours will only be the basement, upstairs is all done now. It will take forever because Fiance works too much and will do it all himself as well (or most of)

I started getting anxiety when he was talking about getting buckets to haul out the dirt when he jackhammers out the concrete to plumb the bathroom in the basement

My husband is a contractor. Thankfully we don’t have any projects on the go at the moment but his tools have taken over our house. Literally the entire basement is FULL of tools and supplies. My coping mechanism is closing my eyes on my way to the laundry room, LOL!

We’re planning on building our new house ourselves, so that will be ridiculously stressful and horrible, but also oddly fulfilling I imagine. Someone remind me of this thread when I come on here screaming next year…

we arent in our house yet but fi’s talking about getting new windows and installing them himself, laying about 500 feet of concrete in the back, building a shed attatched to the house, re modeling the kitchn and re painting the inside and outside of the house. oh ya did i mention we should be moving in a month before the wedding and he wants this all finished before the wedding!! ahhhhh
