My lunch break took an unexpected turn today. Instead of running to the store for salad and tofu for tonight’s dinner, I was speeding up the highway to the hospital. My SO called just before noon from the emergency room. You know a conversation isn’t going to end well when he starts with, “Honey, I don’t want to worry you, but…” He was having some symptons that seemed to him to point to heart problems.
Luckily I have a great boss, so when I told her about the call, her response was, “Go, go, go!” I broke multiple speed limits driving the 40 minutes to the hospital. Now the Boyfriend or Best Friend is a bit of a hypochondriac, and this isn’t the first time we’ve spent the afternoon getting him checked out. But when it comes to the heart, you don’t take chances…and my own poor heart was doing double-time during that drive.
Long story short, a few hours later all tests looked great, but they decided to admit him just in case. While they were getting him settled, I ran home to take care of our dog and two cats, put together an overnight bag for him, and grab a quick bite from the convenience store (so much for a nice, healthy meal).
His parents were there by the time I got back, and as I entered the room, his dad told him, “Now this visitor will make you very happy.” And I did, apparently. *Warning: Here comes the mushy part.* The Boyfriend or Best Friend wouldn’t let go of my hand and just kept kissing it and smiling at me. And when his dad introduced me to a nurse as the Girlfriend, my SO said, “Not for much longer. My soon-to-be wife.” (I reminded him later that he’s forgetting that pesky engagement part comes first!)
We had a long talk after his parents left about this health scare and how this, unfortunately, will not be the last. Oddly, although today sucked mightily, we were able to laugh, joke, and ultimately, grow from the experience. And I think we’re a little stronger for it.
Thanks for letting me share. Long, I know, but I can’t sleep, and getting this out of my system helps. And for fun, here’s a pic we took in the emergency room. Bonus points to those who get the reference! Lol.
