I am BEYOND excited – my guy has the very soul of an engineer. He makes… well, everything. He’s building our timber frame cabin with hand chiseled joints (no nails or screws), and he made the lumber for the house from the trees on the property, and he drilled our well with nothung but a hammer. He made electronically controlled motors that strap to your forearms so you can rocket through the water like friggin’ Aquaman, he made a CNC machine to make handles for his tools, he made a giant barge to travel around the waters… I could go on. This guy can do EVERYTHING!
So, of course, it is out of the question that he’d ever BUY me an engagement ring! Never even came up. He’s going to make it by hand. He has an incredible, extensive knowledge of chemistry, and for a while half our kitchen was actually a lab complete with a fume hood and all sorts of stuff. For a while, his hobby was salvaging computer chips and isolating the gold out of them, and the resulting gold is completely pure. A little while ago he sold it all, but mentioned that he kept one large slug so that HE CAN MAKE ME A RING. I got SO excited! I asked him, “wouldn’t it be too soft?” and he rolled his eyes at me and was like “obviously I know it needs to be alloyed.” I love this guy.
The gold sits in a certain place in our house, so I know that when it’s gone, it’s actually in process! My only other ring has suspiciously gone missing, so I think we’re getting close! I’m reasonably certain the proposal will come on this New Year’s Eve, when we’ll be spending the first nights together in our hand built house on our second anniversary.
Sorry about the huge long post, but I HAD to share this with somebody, it is way too exciting! Eeeeee!
Weddingobsessed : heh! He’s from Alaska, so he spent his childhood from an early age woodworking and dragging trophy caribou carcasses miles and miles back to the truck in 10 feet of snow so they’d have meat to eat. It is very hard to take that out of a person, as it turns out!
A guy on Pricescope secretly handmade an engagement ring for his fiancé. He designed the cads, made the plastic molds, melted and alloyed the gold, and set the 1.53 ct asscher cut diamond all by himself! It turned out so beautiful and his thread is one of my all time favorite threads. You should really check it out.
Here’s the thread. It has all the technical details. He gets a lot of guidance and advice from some of the most knowledgeable experts on Pricescope, so your fiancé may want to look at it as well.
