@dancingfox:  When I think of black tie I think of long dresses, especially if your guy is in a tux. But long dresses are expensive and if you don’t think you’ll wear it again, it may be pointless to buy one. Have you checked out renttherunway.com?

I just used renttherunway this weekend for a black tie event.  It’s my second time using them and I love it.  I’m about 5’4″, and even in “long”, some were just right or even a little short with heels.  Especially certain brands.  The stylists available for chat and the customer reviews are super helpful.

Also longer bridesmaid dresses have worked for me before!  Then I can just get them hemmed and have a formal dress to keep.

if you don’t want to wear a long dress, a fancy cocktail dress is appropriate

Black tie is formal, so evening gown, but “black tie requested” is very unclear. You should be able to get away with a nice dress. Also, your FI doesn’t need to rent a tux if he doesn’t want to, especially with an event start time before 6pm; he could just wear a suit if he prefers.
