I came off the pill in April after about 8 or so years on it.

My libido hasn’t really changed. Some days I want to pounce on DH, some days I couldn’t care less about sex. This seems to be normal for me whether on or off the pill.

My periods have been weird. I’m on a pretty regular cycle of around 29 – 30 days, but my period has basically been several days of spotting with two or three days of very light flow. Much lighter than when I was on the pill, which does not seem to be the norm. Very little cramping so far. I had heavy periods and AWFUL cramps before going on the pill.

My skin is super oily and gross and I’m breaking out like I did pre-pill.

No other positive changes to note, just that it’s nice to know my body is doing its thing naturally.

How’s your libido been since coming off BCP? AWESOME. Like, zero to sixty. Sort of freaked me out at first (like, honestly, I’d never had sexy dreams, and I’d wake up and be all ‘wtf is going on!?’ Hahah). Definitely one of the perks we’ve experienced.

How have your periods been while TTC? Really heavy? Crazy cramps? Nutso PMS? They’re pretty comparable to my on-pill periods, and now even shorter, actually. The cramps are little more intense, I can definitely feel middleshmertz when I ovulate, and I CRAVE sour candy the day before my period. Like a pregnant lady craving! Less PMS for me – on the pill I’d always know that my period is coming b/c I’d cry the day before (dropped a sandwhich, saw an ASPCA commercial, etc) but now I only know it’s coming from charting and a little gas.

Any other nasty symptoms or great benefits you feel like sharing? As a PP said, I feel a lot clearer, less foggy, more present. It’s been the best perk of going off the pill for me/us. More energy, less ‘blah’ and definately more aware of life in general (that makes me sound like a hippy, but I was truly amazed at the difference it made for me). Slightly oilier skin/hair during parts of my cycles, but nothing drastic.

We came off so that I could be off hormonal pills after 8+ years. Not TTC, so we chart to avoid (FAM- Taking Charge of Your Fertility and using the FemCal app on my iPhone) and use the POM. We could be using condoms to play it super safe, but we know we’re playing with a wee bit of fire, and we’re fine with that. Here’s a link to a thread that’s similar to this, where a few bees went off at once and kept it semi-updated on the transition. I found it really helpful when I went off the pill.

How’s your libido been since coming off BCP? MUCH better. It was actually immediate, too– pretty much as soon as my withdrawal bleed stopped. It’s just SO much better, for that reason alone I don’t ever want to go back on the pill. I didn’t realize how off I was until i stopped taking the pill.

How have your periods been while TTC? Really heavy? Crazy cramps? Nutso PMS? Actually, not nearly as bad as I feared. My periods were super heavy, very bad, cramps, and long, before I went on the pill, which was a big factor for going on it in the first place. Like, lay in bed all day with a heating pad, bottle of Advil, and tea bad. Since going off (about 3 months ago) my periods are definitely heavier than they were on the pill, but really not that bad at all, and the cramps are a little worse than on the pill, but nothing that a couple of advil on the first day doesn’t fix. I haven’t reached for a heating pad yet.

The PMS is worse in that I’m definitely moodier before my period, but I’m also happier the rest of the time. Like

@takemyhand:  it feels like a fog lifted off my emotions, although I’m not quite as snappish as I was.

Any other nasty symptoms or great benefits you feel like sharing? Menstrual migraines! They are seriously brutal. I had a bunch the first month off, now I just seem to get one or two days of them a month but I haven’t figured out exactly when in my cycle. I’m charting my temps and can see that I’m ovulating, which is great, and have noticed some symptoms around that as well (sore boobs, etc).

As far as not going off until you are ready to TTC, you just have to be careful with other protection until you are ready. Lots of people go off the pill without getting pregnant, it’s just that it’s harder because you got used to the convenience of not worrying about it. For us, we use a combo of condoms, pulling out, and charting (after I confirm ovulation with my temps, we feel safe), but we would be totally fine with getting pregnant a couple of months ahead of schedule.

How’s your libido been since coming off BCP?

The first month off it was the same, but this cycle I have noticed it has gone up A LOT. Woo hoo!

How have your periods been while TTC? Really heavy? Crazy cramps? Nutso PMS?

Mine have been the same as while on BCP (2 -3 days) just with a little more intense cramping. I was so worried they would go back to being super heavy like they were before BCP.

Any other nasty symptoms or great benefits you feel like sharing?

My skin has been breaking out more than usual, but nothing I can’t handle.

@MissNoodles:  How’s your libido been since coming off BCP? Much better =)

How have your periods been while TTC? Really heavy? Crazy cramps? Nutso PMS? I’d say a slightly heavier bleed, little crampier, but overall pretty much the same. =)

I just got off the pill last month not knowing what to expect…i got my period naturally about 32-34 days from the first day of my previous period on the pill. And i had been on the pill for like 10 years…we’re not trying to get preggos just yet because we still wanna travel so hopefully in 2 years we will be expecting…but I also wanted to make sure to get my body back to producing its own hormones…and i didnt want to have any bad luck trying ot get preggos later when we are ready….Ive heard many of my married friends are having trouble getting pregnant so thats why i decided to stop the pill now and use condoms for now…

Anyways, I noticed that when on the pill i didnt have any libido at all and it was frustrating because I was kinda dissapointed as it made me feel like i was an old lady…but now that i’m off i feel much better…i think its because i was using yasmin which was low hormones…

As for my period..I think this first one lasted about 5 days and wasn’t as heavy as it was when i was a teenager but definitely lasting longer then when i was on the pill..

So far so good. Hope that it will be a good sign.

I stopped nuvaring in the middle of May and I’m pretty happy to be off it.

How’s your libido been since coming off BCP?

Much, much better.  On BC it was pretty much null, except for the off weeks.  I don’t think it’s totally back to where it was before, but definitely much better on BC.

How have your periods been while TTC? Really heavy? Crazy cramps? Nutso PMS?

I haven’t been off that long, but the one real period I’ve had was not what I expected.  Before I went on BC I had really heavy, really long (10ish days) periods.  Even on BC my periods were about 7 or 8 days, sometimes 9.  This time, it was just 6.  I was happily amazed, because I expected to go right back to 10.  But on the downside, I had awful cramps, that I never had before.  I’ve never really been one to get PMS, and I didn’t notice getting it before this cycle.  We’ll see what happens in a couple weeks, if I’m not knocked up.

Any other nasty symptoms or great benefits you feel like sharing?

I really like not having my body regulated by hormones, and if I hadn’t been so concerned with no having my period during my wedding or honeymoon, I would’ve found different contraception months ago.  The only bad thing right now is trying to figure out what my body’s doing.  I had a 43 day cycle previously and now I’m on CD20 and not certain if I’ve O’d, or if my cycle will be any shorter this time.  I kind of wish I’d gotten off BC sooner so that my cycle could regulate before I got completely baby crazy…which I am now, lol.

How’s your libido been since coming off BCP? Noticed increase!

How have your periods been while TTC? Really heavy? Crazy cramps? Nutso PMS?

My periods are a little harsher, I was however primarily taking the pill to relieve extreme cramping so I expected an increase in pain.

Any other nasty symptoms or great benefits you feel like sharing? I had headaches for the first two weeks, nasty headaches, queasy stomach and ravenous appetite at the same time.  I joked that there must be a residual effect in the medication that makes it feel like pregnancy symptoms when you stop so you will want to get back on them! LOL

@MissNoodles:  Popping in to say that it felt like a fog had lifted from me as well. My libido skyrocketed, sex got better, and I felt like I had a more tuned-in connection to my emotions and the things going on around me. I know it’s not the same for every woman, but I’ll never take hormonal BC again.

I’ll chime in to say I also had a major increase in sex drive, which was awesome.  Sex got much more enjoyable, too (because how much fun is sex when you don’t really wanna have it?) Hormones are crazy — we really just are animals reacting to one another’s smells.  My periods aren’t much different than on the pill.  The only downside (other than crazy screwed up cycles) is the breakouts — on my arms.  Yuck.

But, I too fall into the camp of never planning to go on the pill again.

Not off BCP now, but when we were TTC my libido was a lot higher when I was off BCP. My periods were regular and maybe a little heavier. My mood was so much better.

I am still currently on BCP and have been cosisitently for the last 10 years probably and im only 24 so I am very nervous about what will happen after I come off them seeing it has been so long. I am looking forward to and hoping that my libido will skyrocket because right now I am indifferent to sex most of the time. Like someone else said, I feel broken and like a disappointment to my husband. Anyway I noticed that no one mentioned any change with their weight. Did anyone lose weight after going off the pill?  We will be TTC around our one year anniversary so after reading how long it takes people I am thinking I should stop after our honeymoon in October just to get my body back in the normal swing of things.
