We are trying to conceive and have been having unprotected sex for over a year now. I’ve been off birth control for two years so that isn’t an issue. I only have 5-6 periods per year so I found a new OBGYN who requested blood tests. She called me today to tell me that my prolactin levels were elevated and she wants it rechecked in 6 weeks. She mentioned PCOS and said we would discuss everything at my follow up appointment after my next round of blood tests. Of course I’m a bit frustrated – I feel like we’ve been waiting so long already – but I’m also worried. I’m only 24 so I know we have time but I guess I’m just looking for others with similar experiences. Anyone??

I have high prolactin but it’s from meds I take. My OB told me the norm is about 20 and mine is about 85. In the beginning it was about 115, 120. Maybe a referral to an RE would be helpful?

I also have (slightly) high prolactin levels, although I have always had fairly regular cycles (No PCOS). I have been on meds to lower my levels for about 9 months and they are staying within normal limits. The cause for my high prolactin is a cyst/tumor in my brain around my pituitary gland. My RE had me do an MRI to find this as it is a common cause. When you do go back for your recheck, make sure to fast beforehand and do not have sex that morning or night before as nipple stimulation and food can both affect the results. We unfortunately don’t know if this prolactin is the cause of my infertility, but it’s been 2 years and I have not gotten pregnant yet.

Definitely! I found an RE in my area and I’m thinking that’s my next stop!

Thanks for the advice! I was also told my levels were slightly elevated. I guess the reason she’s leaning toward PCOS is my irregular cycles but I also read about tumors on the brain. Will definite fast and skip sex the day before!
