I dont know if this is a silly question but I am fairly clumsy…Ive read people on here on another post state they hit their engagement ring all the time on accident and nothing happens………I am a little paranoid I might break my diamond (is that possible even?) …any tips?…I am super clumsy…I admit it…and just want to make sure I dont ruin this super expensive purchase!

Diamonds are really strong. However, that is not an excuse to not be careful. Diamonds can chip if you hit it at a certain angle.
I’m not realy sure what tips I can say, maybe:
- Lower the setting
- Bezel the stone
- Wear it only special occassion
- Wear it around your neck
Reading over these, they sound really pathetic. But I think the main point is, there are ways to safeguard it but you should probably try to be more careful. This is mostly for the health–if you’re always losing balance and stuff there might be underlying reasons for this.
Good luck! I hope some people can chime in for more information.

I’m not sure. I am the exact same way, though. I do not have a ring (yet!!) but I am definitely worried about this once I do. Would love to hear the comments. 🙂

I would be more worried about the metal/setting of your ring rather than the diamond itself. I have banged my hand against things before and nothing has happened to the diamond but I have had scratches happen in the gold band of my e-ring. I would just get it checked out every 6 months or so to check the setting and you should be fine!

sstatler: Not common, but possible. My best tip is to carry full replacement insurance. I would be sure that there has been no previous laser drilling for enhanced clarity, and that if there are any inclusions, they are located in areas that are not prone to damaging or weakening the stone.

It happened to my diamond after only several months. Was the tiniest little crack on the top. It was a low set diamond, too. But I was rough on my hands when I taught. Now I don’t worry so much…but ya it was kind of just the wrong place at the wrong time, and I am not even really sure when it exactly happened. Luckily I have a lifetime warranty with the company and happened after a few months, could have been worse.

I was SO scared about this same thing. Lol. My setting is pretty high. Every once in a while I’ll whack it on something, but the only thing it hurts is my finger. I think you’ll be ok!

A friend of mine cracked her emerald cut solitaire right in half :O

It depends a lot on your quality of diamond and the cut. Square cuts can be more likely to chip/crack if hit on their weak points (corners) and heavily included stones can be more likely to crack/chip if struck.
Realistically though you’re more likely to damage your setting than the stone

It can happen. Carry insurance for sure if you are that worried. I agree with bellweddingoct2015: about the avtual setting, I have a ring that has diamonds in it that were my grandmothers. Its 14K white gold. One time I grabbed a large metal door handle in a weird way and bent the ring! It’s not anywhere near a circle now but it still fits on my finger. A lower or bezel setting can help, but things happen.

sstatler: In the 15 years that I have had my sapphire, it has never cracked or chipped. I am a clutz too…constantly banging it on things. The prongs have only been replaced once and that was because I caught it on the baby carseat belt funny and slightly bent one.
