I don’t think I look good in updos, but I love big shiny waves like this. I asked a hair stylist to do this for me once and they straighted my hair before curling it. My hair is naturally wavy and can hold a curl, but the straightening seemed to kill it, and the style didn’t hold that well. I’ve read online that the vintage way of doing these waves is to wear curlers overnight and then brush them out. I’m tempted to try that myself. Have you tried either of these?

I’m planning to wear my hair similar to this. I have thin hair with a loose natural wave when air dried. My hair will hold a curl if set hot enough and not brushed out much.
Did you ask to have your hair straightened first, or did the stylist suggest it? I went to my trial with my hair washed and roughly blow dried (which leaves it straight-ish but not completely). The stylist used a curling iron and set each curl with clips up on my head for awhile before arranging and pinning (to keep the left side back) and spraying the whole thing. It did last for the rest of the day for me.

I’ve tried it with rollers overnight – not the most comfortable but it worked and I loved the look. I have thick, fine hair with a very slight wave to it and my hair doesn’t typically hold a curl for very long. I used a light misting of Aussie Instant Freeze spray to set it.
