my hubby and I are home after 6 months backpacking around the world! It was the best experience of our lives. We took over 8000 photos! They are still on our memory cards.
If anyone has any questions I’d hope id be able to help as we learnt so much on the road that may be useful to others who have planned travel. Hard being home in the cold!! (We live in New Zealand)
we went to :
Took 24 flights, 46 busses trains ferries!!
it was fantastic, and now I’m back on the bee yay!

That is so awesome! What were some of your packing essentials or tips? Did you have the whole trip planned out before you left or did you wing it? How did you choose where to stay?

SunflowerGarden: we brought a round the world ticket which gives you 16 flights if your choice so we knew where we wanted to go and worked around our flights , we planned the rough idea of what we were doing before we went but it changed a couple times as we went. We booked everything on hostel bookers! Was so helpful! One packing essential was ear plugs and eye mask!! Couldn’t have slept without them! And a good hair dryer 🙂 are u travelling soon?

Sounds amazing!!! Do you have a blog or place where people could see pics? That is seriously a trip of a lifetime. You’re so lucky!

That sounds amazing. If you don’t mind sharing, roughly how much did the whole experience cost? So many people only dream about doing something like this so I’m curious to hear if it’s more attainable than we’d think.
Also, how do you pack for 6 months away? I’d assume that you’d need to pack relatively light to be so mobile. I’m the person who brings a full rolling suitcase for a weekend away so clearly packing light is not my thing.

I’ve also always wondered how people who do this handle their lives at home while they’re gone. Do you rent or have a mortgage that you’re still responsible for? For me, it seems like that would be the biggest hurdle in traveling for 6 months. We’d still need a home to come back to so we’d have to continue to pay all of these bills while we’re gone.
Sorry about so many questions. I’m intrigued. 🙂

Super jealous! Trip of a lifetime!! I would love to just hear some unique stories and more about the overall experience.
ilovebacon: Similar to her questions, but do one or both of you work from home ..or how did you manage to 6 months off?!

Wow! That’s crazy! How do you take 6 months off of work? That’s so cool to take 6 months off from life though. That had to be so incredibly expensive?!

Commenting to follow/read op’s responses!! This is so awesome!

Wow! My husband would looooove to do something like this. I’m interested in your responses as well. I have no clue how much something like this would cost. And the logistics of packing/clothes washing are intriguing.

also commenting to see the logistics! My Brother-In-Law & SIL backpacked through Asia for 8 months a few years ago – they had both finished teaching at a university, didn’t have a mortgage/cars/any bills really & could take the time off

Can you give some tips on how this all works as far as planning? You mentioned that you bought around the world tickets. Where from?
I’d also like to know a ball park of how much it cost. I’d die to go on a trip like this!
