5 months, start to finish. Nearly 4 of the 5 months were spent struggling with the mortgage people

Barely a month on our first house; second house was about 6 weeks from finding to moving in (could have been sooner but we were relocating so it was a timing thing).

We looked for about 7 months. Once we found this house though, our offer was accepted and we closed 30 days later.

Depends on how picky you are, how limiting your price range is, and what the real estate market is like your area.  Experiences can really differ with these factors – however, I do live in the same city as you, @MadTownGirl!  Makes me wonder if your mom was my loan officer.  😛

I started looking at houses in August of 2010, with a pretty low budget for Madison (looking for something less than 170K, ended up spending less than 150K:  I saw over 50 houses), but a huge desire not to rent any longer, and closed on my house in late November of 2010.  So, about 3 months.  I voted 3-6, in the poll, though.  🙂

Ours from looking to closing was about 3 months.  But we also bought when it was a seller’s market so houses weren’t on the market very long in the area we bought in.  Lenders were also much more lax than they are now so everyone qualified for a mortgage.

Over a year for us. We looked at so. many. houses.

Once we found the one we finally decided on the closing and everything was fairly quick though.

I assume this poll also excludes short sales and foreclosures? Those almost always seem to take longer, much much longer. We were hell bent on getting out of the apartment, so they ween’t even on my radar.

We met with realtor in September, met with mortgage servicer Halloween day, started looking in early November, found the home a week later, and we’re closing in a little over 2 weeks. We delayed things in order to give the sellers a couple months to buy another home out of state where they wanted to move. I hope they found something. It’s slim pickin’s here in the mid-Atlantic!

@lovekiss:  Amen!!! I’ve been lurking on Zillow, Trulia and realtor.com, and realizing that had we not jumped on what we jumped on in November, we’d easily still be renting. ::gags at thought:: Maryland is impossible!

Just over 9 months.  We put in several offers at and over list price and were under contract twice.  It was all worth it- it is our forever home.

We started looking at the beginning of April, found our house mid late-mid April, closed at the end of May, and then rented back to the sellers from close of escrow through the end of July, because they had to wait for their sellers to move.

I surfed various real estate websites the year leading up to our move trying to get a sense of prices. We hired an agent once we were ready to purchase and found something within 3 months.
