@BreezyBride24:  I would hire a reputable contractor and since you don’t have personal belongings in the home yet, I don’t see the reason you need to be there 🙂

@BreezyBride24:  I agree with @lindsey_k_16. Hiring a reputable contrator will save you a lot of headaches, and your belongings aren’t there yet anyway. My FI works in the skilled trades, so I’m lucky he renovated our house from top to bottom. I know he’d never even think about touching anyone’s stuff if he was working on their house (he hates residental work anyway, lol).

If we had no belongings in the house, I would be fine with unsupervised workers. But since our stuff is here, including Mr. LK’s prized collection, we make sure that someone is always home when workers are here.

If you don’t have anything in it I’d go for it. You could always get one of those locks like realtors use on houses so you don’t have to change the locks too.

I had extensive work done on my home before I met Mr. Kitty.  It wasn’t possible for me to stay home for weeks at a time, so I made sure that my valuable items were locked up, hired a reputable company and gave them a key to come and go during business hours.

We just had our whole condo renovated. Most of it was done while we were on vacation in Europe.

We hired a reputable contractor that friends had used, notified our insurance company ( our normal theft insurance as part of our condo policy does not apply if you have contractors in while you are not home), bought a special policy to cover any liability issues and the special concerns re theft. We had no problems.

We’ve had renos done while we weren’t home.  We selected companies that had insurance and good references.  The insurance gave me comfort that we’d be able to settle any major issues.

We put anything valuable out of sight to avoid unnecessary temptations, but generally we don’t have tons of overly expensive things in our home so I wasn’t too worried.
