Add me to the list of people’s homes broken into this week. They stole many expensive items from our place…thank god for homeowner’s insurance though. It is such a horrible invasion of privacy and is totally creepy knowing there was someone in our house going through our stuff. I’m just happy no one is hurt and my cat is okay (but very shaken up).
Anyway, we had someone from ADT come out and give us an estimate on getting a home security system. I’ve never had one before. Does anyone have any experiences with home security systems? Do you feel like they help? What companies are good?

Wow, I guess it’s because of the holidays or something. I’m sorry that they stole your stuff. We have never had a security system but we are thinking about getting one so I’ll watch this thread.

I had ADT when I lived alone. Luckily, I never had anyone break in, but it sure gave me a LOT of peace of mind. The only incidents was when I’d wake up groggy and open the dining room door without disarming it. Oops, that would wake you up. They were always really responsive and called right away and you’d give them the password. No harm no foul.

We have Brinks (now Broadview) and I haven’t had any problems with them. I definitely recommend getting a security system. SO worth the peace of mind you get! 🙂

🙁 I am SO very sorry this happened to you!!
we have a home alarm – I would NOT live where we do without one…we sorta live right in between a decent neighborhood and a ghetto neighborhood…the house already had one and so it was the first thing i did when we moved in – called and had them set it up for us!
we have a specific company here in indy – not brinks – it’s called “Sentinal”…ours only works on the front door and back door – there is a motion detector for inside the house – however we never enable it because of our pets – and the alarm we have is an older model that doesn’t have it set up for weight of the pets…
But anywhoo – I LOVE having our alarm system – especially on nights when Darling Husband works late parties (sometimes doesn’t get home till midnight or later) – as I’m a very paranoid person as it is… lol
we pay about $25/month ($75 every 3 is how we have it set up) and it’s TOTALLY worth the piece of mind.

omigosh i’m sorry to hear that!
I have a Brinks (now Broadview) system. To equip our 2,000+ square foot home, it total, cost about $800. BUT, that was because we had to add an extra glass break and like, 5 extra window units. At $100 and $150 a pop, it added up fast. Get an estimate–it never hurts.
I also had smoke alarms added in. They are WIRED to the Fire Department. You never think about that until you need it. They go off, the department is here! But if you have regular smoke alarms, the fire department gets out there after someone else calls it in. It’s too late for me to risk it
Also i’m wired in to the police department. This is $30 a month. Even if you have an alarm, if you aren’t wired to the Po Po, they do you no good. But if your’e wired in, they come IMMEDIATELY. I locked myself out once and they were here in like 2 minutes. No joke.
I love my alarm system. I sleep safely, soundly, and I don’t worry. I’m a worry wort naturally and I feel 100% comfortable leaving for a week for business or pleasure and knowing my house is secure. And if an alarm DOES go off, i get a call, to my cell, and someone asks me what’s up and what’s going on. My cats are safe, too–they’re indoor kitties and I like to know everything is protected
I get a discount on my home insurance, too. Essentially, the system has paid itself off with discounts I receive for being safe. Also i got a discount on my ring insurance b/c the home has an alarm.
You can’t go wrong. I just can’t recommend one enough. Really! And they’re so easy to use.
