After reading recent post of home break-ins, I’ve been considering getting a home security system. However, we rent our townhouse. I know other people who have purchased a home security system in rentals, but I was curious if anyone else has? And what company would you recommend? Neither of our parents have a home security system, so we feel a bit in the dark here.

Honestly, for a rental, I wouldn’t pay to put in a security system. You can buy some beepers at home depot for the doors and windows that go of when they’re opened. You can also get a beware of dog or some kind of sign like that for your front yard.
If you did decide to do a system, you would have to pay the installation fee then the monthly monitoring fee, which can be pretty expensive. I believe I had ADT in my college house. It’s a great thing to have because it makes you feel better but really, all you need is something to wake you up because a thief can steal a lot of stuff in the minute they have before the alarm system alerts the police.

I’m not renting an apartment yet, but I rent for my business and I use ADT. I’ve been woken up a couple times in the middle of the night with a call saying the alarm was going off. Once the door was open, but nothing was missing, and the second time the doors were still locked but the alarm was going off. I think the alarm is sometimes enough to scare someone off. When we purchase our house I’m sure we’ll get a system. Not sure if I’d had one at our (future) appartment though. Fiance has a safe and a gun so we’re all set 🙂
