This is the best photo of my dress that I have in my phone. My mom sewed my dress for me in a little over 2 months as we ended up moving our wedding date up an entire year (was supposed to be this September, decided to have it last September). She is a super woman!!

I commissioned the bodice bc I was making so much else (you name it, I probably made it. Including fabric flowers with hand melted petals…for 32 centrepieces).

But I made the skirt! I had the genius idea to cut the circle skirt and hang and then re-cut to accoumt for bias stretching…but I interlined it with cotton…which I didn’t hang and recut. So, it’s not so expertly done. Hemmed with 3″ horsehair braid, which I first did wrong, and then had to pick and redo. Yay.

Oh. Fabric was 54″ silk dupioni that I got at joann for 60% off which came to about $10/yd for 54″ real silk! I got the soft Swiss dot tulle on etsy for about $5/yd which is good, bc I think I used 16 yards! There were 2 layers of circle skirt tulle, and then a top layer of a double circle, so it was ridiculously full. The middle layer of tulle is actually one of those cheap ikea curtains! It was the right shade and right texture, and you can’t beat the price!

$15 hoop from eBay. The hoop was the best decision. Made it so much easier to walk!

(We schlepped our garb to Paris on our honeymoon, which was 3.5 mos after the wedding. Even a custom corset isn’t very comfy if you’re 3 mos pregnant.)

AshleyHolm:  Your mom is super woman indeed! The dress looks great on you, especially in that beautiful fall setting. I’m having my wedding this October and hope the trees will already look like that!

cateyes:  You are so talented and you guys are so lovely in that picture! Also, props to your photographer for taking the photo, I know this place in Paris and it’s always super crowded. I’m guessing you had to get up pretty early to take it. How wide was the tulle you used and how many layers did you end up making with it?

Rugla:  This is the tulle I used https://www.etsy.com/listing/161746559/off-white-lace-fabric-soft-mesh-dot-lace?ref=cat_gallery_1  It’s pretty wide-about 63″. I had 4 layers in the skirt. Well, sort of 5. silk on the bottom interlined with cotton, 1 layer polka dot, 1 layer ikea curtain http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/90111980/, and then another layer of polka dot, but the top layer was a double circle. (Instead of cutting the waist circle to be your actual waist, you do it half of your waist and cut two.)

You can’t see it well in that picture, but the corset had cording under the bust for a bustier look. I wouldn’t have thought to do it that way, but the seamstress was really smart! Much easier than matching seams!

Oh, and yup! It was about 7am when we took that photo!

I need some motivation to continue working on my dress (I’m making the mock-up now) so I’m bouncing this thread up and asking how all of you lovely DIY wedding dress makers are doing…

Larik:  O.M.G. That is the most beautiful wedding dress I have ever seen! I can’t believe you made that yourself. Can I buy it from you or hire you to make mine? It’s amazing and absolutely everything I want in a wedding dress! (illusion neckline, sweetheart, beading, mermaid) I’m seriously drooling over here!
