We were looking all through out our wedding planning process, and we closed 2 months before the wedding. 🙂

I moved into his condo that he purchased about 4 months before we started dating (my congratulating him was actually the catalyst for us to start talking again as we had been friends for years prior) … he has more then graciously always called it ours as well.

Toucan you give me hope! We are currently looking to buy a house and hopefully move in two or three months before the wedding!

We each bought our own townhouse before we got married. I rented out my place (since it is out of state) and now staying with him. We’re looking to buy a place together in the near future though.

I’ve only been working a year and a half, so we still rent for now. Though I have no idea how anyone affords houses ever. $2000 a month, plus taxes, water, electric, cable, food… that’s all the money I make in a month. ‘Course if we want to live in a crappy little shack, the monthly payments can be as low as $1300 a month. No thank you, I’d rahter rent.

Is it just NJ? I thought houses were supposed to be cheap now.

He moved  out of state 2 1/2 years before our wedding date, and bought a house. It was before we were "officially engaged," but we knew that we were getting married.  I’m moving after we get back from the honeymoon.

We bought together after we were engaged.

imLizzy, I think it varies all over the country, but NJ is particularly difficult with the highest real estate taxes. Plus, North Jersey is overpriced because of it’s relation to NYC and South Jersey has lower costs, but lower pay too. I think anything is negotiable right now in NJ. My friend just bought in NJ for 150K less than list price.

We bought our home two years ago after one year living in an apartment so the stress of buying a home after marriage is not an issue.

February 08 we started looking at places and found one in the process of being built and we put a down payment on it. It was finished and we moved in in May 08 and then got engaged in November. So we already own a home…pre engagement and marriage :o)

I want a house so badly. We are saving up, hoping to buy one in the spring of 2010. It’s hard because we live in DC, where home prices are really high if you want to live anywhere near the city. Both of our jobs are right downtown, so living somewhat nearby is important to me. I don’t want to commute from West Virginia like some people do! (That is a 3 hour commute—a little extreme, but living 15 miles away and having a 2-hour commute would not be out of the realm of possibility)

We bought a loft when dating…after a few months!  Yikes, but 5 years and another condo later, we’re still together!  🙂

I bought a condo while we were dating (but before we got engaged). While Mr. Sushi did look at houses with me, we had no plans of him moving in with me at the time. Welp, I found a place and he moved in immediately and 7 months later he proposed. :o) We’re now saving for a down payment on our next house (probably won’t buy for another few years from now).

@chelseamorning- I’m in the same situation.  We’re married and still renting.  We rent in Rosslyn (Arlington, VA) and both work so close to where we live.  I would love to buy, but we’d have to move pretty far out to afford it- even with housing prices falling.

He bought a fixer-upper several months before we met with the good intentions of fixing it up and renting it out. He was still living with his parents (renting, not mooching) and I was living with my grandparents. And then, once we started dating, we knew pretty much right away that we would end up getting married and, naturally, planned to move into the fixer-upper. So, it was kinda nice since we got to do pretty much anything we wanted with the place as far as painting and carpeting was concerned since the old stuff was so discusting. On the other hand we only had a 8 mo. engagement (4 1/2 mo. official engagement), so it was a fight to get it liveable before the wedding (we only moved in together after the wedding). We didn’t have bathroom sink or a working shower head until 3 mo. after we were married!

    Now to pay it off!
