I heavily researched all of my tattoos and they were a breeze.  My largest one, on my thigh, hardly hurt at all– I almost fell asleep while he was doing it.  After 3 hours, the skin was pretty sore though and him wiping off the ink made me squirm a bit.

The one on my hip wasn’t so easy, though.  There was less fat to cushion it, the artist had a heavier hand, and even though the tattoo is much smaller, it hurt way more!

But pain really shouldn’t be a deterrent to tattoos.  At most, it’ll last you an hour or so.  I did sleep for most of the day after my thigh tattoo, but I’d also driven ten hours roundtrip to get it and my body was just exhausted.  I’m surprised to hear the PP couldn’t walk on her foot, I’ve never had that sort of problem.

I got one on my lower back over ten years ago and it didn’t hurt much at all. It is about the size of a softball. The pain was easily manageable. I got another one about the size of two softballs on my upper back a few years ago and it hurt a lot more than my other one but nothing compared to giving birth to 2 big babies naturally! I have a pretty high tolerance for pain though. But the tattoos just mostly felt really annoying rather than painful.

I’ve heard some horror stories, but I have a tattoo on my foot and it was uncomfortable to get it done… but honestly, it wasn’t so bad. My healing went alright. I didn’t have any pain like pp. I actually hated my tattoo until it healed up, the design showed up better and I fell in love with it all over again. The scabs made it ugly! haha

@MsPanda:  Yikes! your story sounds horrible. I wonder if something didn’t backfire? I was just fine. I could be wrong and your story is more like what happens, but thats scary sounding!

@SweetCheeks:  “annoying” is a good way to describe it.  even the most painful parts it was more of my brain saying “okay, you can stop doing that now!”

also there’s sort of an empowering adrenaline rush. whenever I get one, I’m proud of myself? it hurts but it’s also pretty cool to say “yeah, that hurt but no big deal!”

It depends where you get it. The one on my lower back only got close to unbearable when they were directly over my vertebrae. The one on top of my foot was constant, pleading pain. The guy actually had to lean on my foot to keep it still because the needle was hitting so many nerves that were causing my foot to twitch with pain. I actually left that tattoo as black and white because I couldn’t bear the thought of sitting through the shading!

(but, the healing wasn’t bad for my foot – didn’t have residual pain like the PP. It just hurt like a mother$#&#^@ while it was being done!)

@miss.wiggums:  It was steped on about 30 minutes after getting it done so that might have something to do with it ,and for some reason mine to longer to heal then normal Dont know why on that one….

They hurt more or less in different areas for sure. Healing is painful in itself too… they itch so bad it hurts and you can’t scratch so it makes me crazy. lol

I have 2 on my upper forearms on the inside of my elbow area… just nautical stars that are black and pink and they were pretty painful! Not the worst but definitely had me squeezing my hands so hard my nails broke the skin. They healed faster than many of my other ones though and anyone with tattoos knows healing is the real battle… battle of the itch! Healing drives me crazy!!! lol

I have one on my wrist which is just black and it’s my sons name in a large script font… didn’t hurt barely at all… it was my first tattoo and only took about  10 minutes but it was so easy and healed so fast without hardly any itch!

I have one on my neck that’s just pink and black and it’s a spider web with music notes and stars… this didn’t hurt AT ALL… not even a little. It felt like someone was lightly scratching me and it was fairly fast. It itched a lot during the healing but I think that was because of my hair touching it.

I have one on my ankle that is a scorpion with pink and black colors faiding into each other with a ton of shading! Theres 8 colors in there just to created 2 colors faiding… the multiple shading over and over the same sore skin hurt soooo much! The location hurt so bad too… it felt like someone took a knife to my leg for 2 hours. It bled a lot too. It’s my favorite tattoo now but getting it done was the most painful. Healing was terrible too… it itched and itched and didn’t heal as fast as the previous ones.

I have one on my back that goes about half way up my spine, it’s a pink and black corset with a large pink bow at the bottom. This one had painful moments but overall it wasn’t bad. It took a few hours but it only hurt during the last half hour when he went over parts that were already colored to add more depth in shading. The bow is pretty low in a more fatty area so that hurt worse than my spine… the fatty area felt like I was being cut and burned at the same time… odd feeling. Not terribly painful but painful enough to make me swear a lot… LOL Healing for this one was worse than all the rest!! It was in a bad spot for an itch I guess… my shirt would rub it and it would drive me nuts. I couldn’t sleep for 2 days because on ym back it would itch on my side it felt like it was tearing my skin apart. It healed quickly though- thank goodness!

I’m curious too! Anyone had one done right below the ankle, by the heel? I hear it hurts really bad ’cause there’s not a lot of flesh there and it hits the bone. I’m scared! (I almost cry when my doc has to take blood!)

But reading these are funny because getting my tattoo (on my foot) hurt but not bad at all I did have to take deep breaths a few times but i talked threw most of it. But the healing part of mine was bad and it seems like it was the opposite for the other foot tattoos… HMMM

It totally depends on where you get it done. I have two on my back, neither of which hurt- like a PP said, it was more annoying. The best way I can describe is it’s like having a cat claw scratch you over and over again- annoying, but not painful. Same thing for the one on my arm. I have one on the top of my foot which was worse, but still not terrible. However, the one on my ribs hurt really, really bad. The ribs is one of the worst places for pain that you can get a tattoo. This tattoo also took a long time, though- 4 hours per session. The longer I sat, the worse the pain was. I didn’t cry and I was able to sit still the whole time, but it was pretty intense.

I will say, though, that it’s totally worth it 🙂 I absolutely love my tattoos.

I don’t have any, but my Fiance has quite a few. PPs are right about placement making a difference. You can look up the list of most painful places to get tattoos if you want to avoid that. Be careful if you plan to get color. My Fiance says that every single time he’s had color it hurts WAY more than just getting black ink done. White was the worst for him since he has light skin. They had to go over it more times (and maybe deeper?) for the color to take.

What seems to be the nearly unanimous opinion among friends and family I’ve talked to is that the bonier the area, the more it hurts.  I am a sissy when it comes to pain but have thought about getting a tattoo.  I would probably want to get it in my shoulder blade area, and a couple of people have told me that’s a pretty painful area…do you guys agree?
