Okay ladies. It’s the 6 month mark and I need to start looking at booking the honeymoon.
Some background: Our budget is $4000, although we’d like to stay under, including flights. We really want to stay at an AI where we can just plop in front of the beach and pool. Mexico is kind of what we are thinking, but nothing is set in stone.
My questions are
a) Would you rather stay less time but be able to stay in a upgraded room or stay for a whole week?
b) Any recommendations for resorts to stay at? Right now, El Dorado Royale and Sun Palace are our top contendors, but it’s kind of the peak of the budget.

With a $4,000 I would think you could do both. We stayed at the Royal Playa del Carmen for 10 nights for $4,000. Our room was upgraded from the basic room but not the higher end rooms. However the room was still awesome: spacious with a jacuzzi and balcony.

spend the majority of the week in the nice room then the final night in the amazing room 🙂

@IowaDDS13: i think you should be able to get a nice room and enjoy a full week with your budget. at the higher end hotels, even the standard rooms are nice. most have whirlpool tubs in the rooms or on the balcony. the upgrade with access to the private lounge and personal concierge service is always a nice upgrade. we often take that upgrade over a room upgrade.

Well I voted for the week option, but I guess it depends on what you mean. I originally thought you meant at a nice resort would a room upgrade be worth it. I would sacrifice an amazing room for a good room for a whole week. But I wouldn’t necessarily stay at a lower rated resort, because that affects your food, drinks, activities, etc. So based on what you mean, my answer might change. Basically, I think your budget is plenty high for a week at a nice resort in a basic room no problem. That’s what I would do, and upgrade if you can afford it. If you mention it’s your honeymoon, they might throw in an upgrade.
