We’re going to California for our honeymoon. We have been times before but have stayed with family that lived there and camped and stayed in cheaper hotels. Now for a honeymoon we want a bit more luxury but we ideally dont want to spend over $250 per night.
Any suggestions for good hotels in the following???
- San Diego
- Santa Barbara
- Big Sur
We have our accommodation sorted for Laguna.
By the way we’re going over Christmas and New Year. I have found plenty of hotels in the price range but I would like some recommendations.

Santa Cruz/Monterey/ Carmel is a beautiful and interesting area to stay. Just message me if you decide on it so I can tell you the block of cheap winter hotels to avoid in Santa Cruweren’t from Cali and if I had to pick ANYWHERE there to honeymoon I’d either choose Catalina or go camping in big sur. don’t know anout big sur being great in the winter though. Winter you might want to limit yourself to San Diego.

Thanks for this. We have camped at Julia Pffeifer campground before, the one next to Big Sur Lodge… so my partner suggested actually staying in Big Sur Lodge this time since it’ll be winter. Unsure though as I dont know what the rooms are going to be like, there are very mixed reviews.
I love Catalina and the hope is that we get to go to the New Years Eve party at the Casino, ready and waiting to book in July. But once again no ideas on hotels as previously we’ve jumped on the Catalina Flyer and gone back and forth in a day.
I am stressing about driving Highway One again even though it’s the most amazing drive ever… its just the bendy roads around the cliffs that scare the life out of me hah.

@englishrose2013: Are you taking Highway One the whole way? Wowsers that is crazy, I would be green!
Not sure of your budget but Ventana Inn is AMAZING! We stay there every once in a while to get away.

We stayed at the Glen Oaks for our “mini-moon” in Big Sur and it was fantastic. We were in the Big Sur Cabin, and it was so romantic and peaceful. Very close to Nepenthe (best restaurant and bar in Big Sur) and great hiking.
