If you were originally going to go to Cancun, I am assuming you’d like some sun and sand.  I would also look for places with direct flights.

I suggest going to Sanibel Island, an island off the coast of Florida.  It would be a quick direct flight from MN (you would fly to Ft. Meyers).  Travelocity was showing airfare under $250 round trip.   Shop around for deals and maybe it will be $200 for a weeklong car rental.  There are many different options where to stay: cottages, hotels – but it is a skinny little island so everything is on the beach.  Good restaurants, and I recommend renting a bike (tandom!) and riding around the island.

I estimated a 7 day trip, $200 a day for food and activity, $300/night for hotel. Total = $4200 (though I always try to be liberal with budget so you never go over.  I bet you could do this whole trip for $3k).

I know you’ve said you did the travel agent route before – but you can look online for deals and don’t need to use a travel agent.  Other US places that could be fun:

Santa Barbara – but fly into LAX, much cheaper and direct from MN

San Diego – stay in Del Mar

Both of those are West Coast and that is a hike from MN… we go to Coco Beach a lot in Florida (fly into Orlando – cheaper and direct) and they have the most beautiful beaches.

But use priceline for car rental, set up your computer to automatically alert you when prices decrease for the flight you want, look at vacation home rentals instead of hotels (and then you will have a kitchen and you can go grocery shopping instead of eating out 3 meals per day..) all of those things will save money.

Good luck.

How about staying at a 4 star, all inclusive hotel in Cancun or Puerta Vallarta for less nights?  My parents took four of us to Puerta Vallarta last summer for four nights.  The TOTAL bill, including airfare was $2,000 for all of us.  There were no suprises and the food and alchohol were included.  I believe they booked it through funjet.com .

We are thinking about doing an all inclusive package to Los Cabos for our Honeymoon.

What about picking out a less expensive resort in Cancun?  I also love the Ft. Myers / Sanibel island area, then you could also drive down to Key West or Naples, which is just down the coast.  Naples has great food and nighttime areas.

Could you reduce your time from 10 days to 7 and save money that way?  Just a thought.

It must be hard to cancel the big vaca you were looking forward to, but I think the peace of mind you’ll have at staying under budget will be worth it…way to be responsible!

We’re going to Arizona in late October. Specifically, Sedona and the Grand Canyon and possibly some other towns around there. I’m not sure what we’re doing yet (suggestions welcome!), but we’ll probably do budget hotels/hiking/touristy stuff part of the time and splurge at least one night at a fancy spa/resort. It’s perfect for us because there’s relaxing and appreciating the natural beauty (don’t have much of that in Dallas!), but also seeing ancient ruins, doing Jeep tours, being adventurous.

I also second the shorter timespan. You might be able to live more luxuriously during four days if that’s important to you.

Some other places you might consider: Napa, Charleston, Savannah, Key West, Austin and the Texas Hill Country, Vermont, Maine.

I firmly believe that you don’t have to be extravagant to have a wonderful time with your new husband! Good luck.

we’re going to florida and doing walt disney world for a week – we’re both huge disney fans, have never been, and there’s so much to do there! it’s even cheaper for us because he works at disney corporate in california, but even without the discount, our hotel is only $200 a night – some are as cheap as $75! if you buy a 7 day ticket, it’s only $35 a day or something like that. you can also get some cool packages. if you’re a kid at heart, it’s a pretty good deal.

los angeles also has a lot to do/see… as does san francisco, napa.

Hey girl!! Married chick here! LOL! And I’m still stalking these boards!!!!!! (Not on our honeymoon yet- we have to wait two weeks!)

I think Florida is the way to go- you can still get gorgeous beaches & luxury (even affordably). The Keys would be an awesome place to go… Really anywhere in FL is good… it just depends on what you’re looking for.

Let me know & I’ll let you know of a  few cool things in some of the towns here!

I’m not sure why your trip to Cancun is so expensive.  You should be able to do a week, or even 10 days, there for a lot less.  I just looked on expedia for all inclusive resorts for the last week in August and it’s only $2000-$2500 for 2 people for airfare from Minnesota and all-inclusive hotel.  I would look around a little on your own – Cancun may still be possible.

Disneyworld though fun gets expenive with admissions costs- Vegas you can get for cheap if you do those condo/time share meetings in exchange for a cheap hotel room but otherwise that is expensive too. . . I think you should try Myrtle Beach (South Caroline) or maybe Miam etc so you can get some fun in the sun but without costly activities. . .
