Um, that’s insane. No way does the average cost that much. My friend went to Jamaica for a week at an all inclusive place and with flights it was around $3000.

I think ours will ring in at about $7000CAD after paying for activities and souvenirs. We’re going to Bali for 10 nights at a 4.5 star all-inclusive.

MrsSapphire:  No, you are not alone. That is way too much. Definitely shop around on your own because you can find some good deals online with different sources.

We’re spending more than that on hotels and airfare for our honeymoon, but we’re looking at this as a dream vacation and will never spend this much on a trip again. We’ll be spending 10 days in France.

For perspective, the last trip we took to Europe (Italy) cost us $3k for hotels and airfare for the same length of time. We’re not usually big spenders on airfare and hotel rooms, but we figure it’s our honeymoon and we’ll never take another one again, so why not just go for it and splurge. Based on the trips I’ve taken in the past, $15k is a lot, and I don’t think it’s a normal amount to spend. We put money away specifically for this trip and thought about it a lot; it’s not something we casually did because it’s the “norm.” Your travel agent is probably trying to upsell you and/or get you mentally comfortable with the idea of dropping a big chunk of change.

MrsSapphire:  we went on an extravagant, 5 star honeymoon for 9 days and with food/booze and all that it was “only” 10k. I guess pushing 12 with airfare. She gets a commission Im sure, so remember that.

Where do you live? We went to Jamaica for our honeymoon and spent about $8,000. If we were going to go overseas to Europe and so a similar level of comfort and luxury, I can easily see a honeymoon costing us $15,000.

That said, we live in Canada, and people we met who were coming from the states spent significantly less. More around the $3,000-$5,000 mark. So I believe you can plan a wonderful honeymoon for around $5,000.

MrsSapphire:  It depends where you are going. I can see some trips will easily reach $15k.

Our budget is $5k:

1. Approximate cost/budget: $5k

2. Is it all inclusive? No

3. How many days is your trip? 10 days

4. Where are you going? Renting a beautiful log home not too far from Vancouver

Everything is a racket when it comes to weddings. If you go to the sandals website they have vacation packages that are close to that figure listed BEFORE they include all the “savings.”

Personally I think they mark up the price and then discount it just to make you think your getting a good deal because if a room is orginally going to run you $10k for a week but you get it for $3K after discounts, no one would ever pay the $10K for that room!

I was looking at cheapcaribbean.com and found a good all inclusive in the domincan that was afordable, then through research found it on orbitz for cheaper.

My advice is first decide on the hotel and then when you have that it will make your research so much easier.

Also check out groupon and living social…they have great packages on there too!
