@yanamari:  I’m also in MD! 🙂 I vote Fiji; I’ve never been there, but it seems beautiful!

If you’re looking for less expensive versions of the places you listed, what about Thailand or the Philippines? I’ve heard they are both beautiful and some places have over-water bungalows as well!

We went to Bora Bora and Moorea for our honeymoon. I considered the Maldives, but the flight was way too long for an 8 day vacation. And the way I would have planned our trip to Maldives, it would have cost more than Bora Bora. And our Bora Bora “budget” already took a lot of convincing to do with DH.

I also wanted to add that having been to Hawaii as well. Bora Bora felt a lot more touristy than Hawaii to me.

I’m also confused how you linked Santorini and Maldives together. Unless there’s another Santorini besides the one in Greece? Or do flights from MD commonly stop over in Greece to get to Maldives?

Definitely check out Bali and Thailand or even Vietnam – much cheaper and you can afford to stay in some absolutely stunning five star resorts that way 🙂

Mr TTR & I are rabid travellers (if we aren’t travelling… then we are at home planning our next adventure)

1- Check the weather history for the timeframe you want to travel during.  Weather can make or break a vacation.  You don’t want to go somewhere if it their Rainy Season (monsoon / hurricane), or too hot & humid.

2- Wherever you venture to… take advantage of Loyalty Programs (Airmiles – Hotel Rewards etc).  Even if you never accumulate enough points to travel with… you can get perks upfront just for being a member (best room when you book etc)

3- Tell EVERYONE it is your Honeymoon.  There are most certainly “unadvertised” perks for Newlyweds.  You could snag an Upgrade or Better Room on Check-In… or a FREE Dessert at Dinner etc.

4- Check out Websites like TripAdvisor for info on Hotel Ratings, Things to Do etc.  TA also has Discussion Boards (they call them Forums) like these here on WBee where you can post questions, ask for advice… and get Locals & those who know an area best to reply and give your FREE but very valuable advice.  Locals are amazing when it comes to “insider info”.  Some of my best vacation tips have come off of TA.

    Hope this helps,

We are doing Moorea for 2 nights then 3 nights in Bora Bora Over water bangalow. CANT WAIT!!!

We are not in the same boat as you though. We are flying from New Zealand so the travel is not that bad but I still found it a pain to get there. Also, it’s not that cheap from NZ to there either.

If you would like, I can recommend a travel agent (US based) who knows a lot about French Polynesia. We went through her and she had the best price.

@this-time-round:  +1 on Tripadvisor. The forums were where I found my travel agent.

We did Moorea/Bora Bora and it was amazing!  Absolutely beautiful and very relaxing!  I can’t even express how fantastic our honeymoon was.  That being said, it is VERY expensive and, seeing that you are coming from the east coast, a very long flight!  However, we knew that we wanted kids right away and that this would be our last chance for a long time to take a vacay like that!  We checked prices all over the web and with a travel agent and we ended up booking though Costco and got a better deal.

I think Hawaii is a good second choice.  For a honeymoon I would suggest Kaui.  It is very beautiful and a little more chill.

@mzmarzipan:  oh yes Costco. I’ve heard several people say Costco had the best deal.
