Re – TripAdvisor Reviews

There will always be people that are hard to please, even in a 5 Star Fabulous Hotel… hence WHY you’ll find horrible reviews on ALL properties.

My best advice… throw out the BEST and the WORST and you’ll find that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

As well… when using TripAdvisor, pay more attention to the stats … stats are static, in that everyone judges things in the same way… set Questions… against a definitive yard-stick.

Numbers therefore are more reliable than words… I always consult the Stats / Numbers first, and then read the written reviews.

So look for how many stars a property has (the rating that is given to a Hotel by the Hotel Industry for the amenities that the Hotel has on offer)… then the HOOTS (circles…1 for LOW 5 for High) that TripAdvisor Travellers have given the hotel for their SATISFACTION as a Customer

And lastly, when the latest Reviews were written… dates. And if there are any trends for the property (who are staying there… or if things are going up or down in the ratings etc).  To discover this you’ll need to dig a wee bit deeper by looking at the Hotel’s own Page on TA

Example…

http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotels-g187791-Rome_Lazio-Hotels.html

PORTRAIT SUITES is currently the # 1 Hotel listed forRomeon TripAdvisor (out of 1260 Hotels)… It is a 5 Star Property with 5 HOOTS for Customer Satisfaction.  There are 209 Reviews, and the latest one was filed on March 1, 2013 (that person gave it 5 HOOTS and called it “Fabulous”).

http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Review-g187791-d601432-Reviews-Portrait_Suites-Rome_Lazio.html

You will also notice, that out of the 209 Reviews, that 192 Traveller gave it an Excellent, 11 gave it a Very Good, 4 gave it Average, and 1 each gave it Poor or Terrible.  As well 114 Reviewers said it was a good choice for Couples.

This Hotel was also a 2013 TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Winner in two Categories… Small Hotels & Luxury.

The only downside to this Hotel therefore might be whether it is a good fit for you or not.  Such as it’s Location (there is a map on the webpage you can click on for more info)… OR the cost of the Hotel, OR whether it is available when you are wishing to book.

As I said, this is just an example of how to read and compare Reviews… and not my personal recommendation of any one property.

This knowledge, should help you out tho when it comes down to trying to decide which one is best for you.

So exciting!!!! There are a lot of nice hotels in Rome, but it is extremely pricey. We stayed near the Piazza Navona – would definitely recommend this area. For 6 nights we paid about $3,000 and it was not a fancy, honeymoonesque type room. Very generic, but we were basically paying for location. We weren’t on our honeymoon so I didn’t care so much. Previous to that I had stayed in a hotel closer to the train station. It was wonderful and very pretty, much less expensive than the Piazza Navona area but oh my gosh it took forever to walk to anything and we basically had to take cabs everyday to get to more of the main part of the city. Pain in the butt!! It would have been worth paying extra to be closer to everything. I don’t have a specific recommendation, but keep in mind that Rome is pretty big and location is key if you’re planning to see a lot of the sights.

Your post had me reminiscing and I remembered something else! My favorite restaurant in Rome and one of my favorites in Italy – Al Duello. I highly recommend it!! It has a romantic atmosphere so it’s good for a honeymoon date. Reservations are a must so if you decide to try it out look it up on Tripadvisor and get the contact info – your hotel can call and make the reservation for you. Florence will be one of our honeymoon stops in October and we’re thinking of taking the train to Rome for one day just for this restaurant!

Also, Fodors.com is usually where I go for travel forums. You’ll get tons of ideas and suggestions from people who are experts on Rome. Have fun!!
