- Wedding: July 2017 - Vineyard on Long Island
lol… i know…. this is what Fiance keeps telling me haha…
For some reason, the Caribbean or Mexico doesn’t scare me because it’s local crime and as long as you’re smart, you can usually avoid it. I get nervous when it comes to international terrorism type threats, and I’m sure this is a factor of being close to both 9/11 and the boston marathon bombing. Are there safe areas in the Philippines and Thailand? I really don’t know much about the areas other than what I read on resort websites and tripadvisor.

What about Belize? We went there a few years ago (in August) and it was awesome. Plenty of beaches, but if you go inland there’s all kinds of things to explore. There’s tons of Mayan ruins and really cool ways to explore them. You can go cave tubing, ziplining, hiking, horseback riding. The best part is, with your budget you could stay in some really nice hotels and do a lot of activities. Once you get down there, everything is pretty cheap. I’ve been to a lot places around the world and Belize was definitely one of my favorites.
I dont know if your budget includes air, but Cape Town, South Africa is also incredible.

Negril, Jamaica. Seven Mile Beach. We’re staying at Couples Swept Away in Negril, Jamaica. Beachfront suite on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Carribbean. But steps away from tons of culture, adventure, and jerk chicken! All for $5500 for 10 days. Flights, hotel, meals, airport transfers, snorkeling, scuba diving, hobie cat sailing, sunset catamaran sail, etc all included. Look into it!

Try out Nairobi and Mombasa in Kenya. In Nairobi, you can take a safari, browse through beautiful hand-crafted textile shopping, and great parties! You must try out the Bomas of Kenya, and Carnivore (esp. if you are a meat-eater). To get to Mombasa, it’s a long $30 bus ride (8 hours) or a short 1 hour flight (recommended). In Mombasa, you get beautiful beaches/resorts, water sports/activities, and all the culture. A trip to Kenya is relatively inexpensive. Average roundtrip flight costs = $900, but if you leave in December, it’s around $600/person. I looked at a super cute beach bungalow on AirBnB and it cost around $600/wk for 4-star amenities (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/7889565?checkin=09%2F17%2F2016&checkout=09%2F24%2F2016&guests=2&s=evVmFPPx).
ETA: Nairobi and Mombasa are safe cities. Like all other places, use common sense: Keep valuables at home or in a safe. Don’t wander strange places at 2:00am. As for it being an African country, bottled water is the standard. Don’t drink tap water, and malaria pills=advisable. I have had many friends visit Kenya with me, and none of them experienced the slightest discomfort just by taking the necessary precautions.

we drove ourselves around town in Cancun and we did not experience any anti-American sentiment. Everyone we encountered on our trips around town was extremely kind and very helpful with our broken Spanish. When you get out of the hotel zone (their tourist area) less people tend to know English. But we had no negative experiences on this trip and felt very safe.

I was going to suggest Jordan (that’s where we’re going!) since we are looking for mostly adventure (Petra, ruins, etc.) with a touch of relaxation (Gulf of Aqaba and Dead Sea), but I’m not sure you’d feel comfortable there based on your comments. FWIW, it’s very safe there and my friends in the intel community have zero concerns about us going. I don’t know specifics about safety in the Philippines, but I would feel comfortable going there. Fiance and I had discussed going to Asia, but I hate flying (also east coast US) and Jordan was far enough for me.

Dubai. Flights are fairly reasonable from the East Coast. It’s not as conservative as the Arab countries (you can prance around in a bikini in the resorts. There are beaches (probably no snorkeling). But tons of indoor adventures: surfing, skiing, water parks. And it is just so exotic. I don’t think there is much crime if any.
Plus you can buy gold from a vending machine🤑

I would go to Cancun, Acapulco or Cuba.

South of France! We spent part of our honeymoon there and absolutely loved it. I know it’s getting a bad rap right now for safety, but I’m of the mind that anything can happen to anybody anywhere…you never know, and it’s no reason to completely avoid a place. It has amazing beaches, shopping, nightlife, gambling, and sightseeing.

Costa Rica would be done very nicely on your budget. Also, little corn island, Nicaragua.

Definitely Costa Rica! I’d split my time between the beach (Jaco area) & the Arenal Volcano area in the Rainforest.

I suggested Thailand but you wondered about safety. The islands are very safe. I’d feel a lot safer on any of them than I would in a big American city. I’ve travelled to every continent and I never felt unsafe in Thailand.
Nice suggestion- Cartagena in Colombia. Beautiful place, loads of history as well as big hotels, and also very safe.
