Hi, we just cancelled our 2 week honeymoon to Europe because my new hubby 🙂 wants to go to a beach instead and save a bit of money.
We have from June 15 – July 1 to play with and can’t decide between Maui or Punta Cana. They are the same price but PC is all inclusive so we would not spend more on food. However we were in PC in November and have never been to Hawaii.
Any suggestions? Is Maui expensive for eating and drinking? I’ve also heard that you need a car in Maui.

Based on what you said I would pick Maui. I’m usually pro caribbean but you were just there! It wont be new at all. I don’t know anything about pricing though.

Maui, espeically since youve been to PC. AI’s arent my thing and 10 days on a single resort with not much else to do would drive me crazy. I did 10 days on St John USVI and went to St Thomas and other excursions and it still made me stir crazy. I’d go to Maui, and island hop over to Kauai and/or Big Island for a few days too.

@sverstrepen: Maui is expensive for food and drinks. You can’t get an all inclusive there.
If you want to save money why not try Bayahibe in La Romana in Dominican Republic or Samana ?
I have been to Dominican Republic 4 times. Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, La Romana and Samana and the last two are just amazing. Humpback whales swim near samana to mate and have little ones. You can go whale watching. La Romana has the most beautiful beach. These two locations are way better then Punta Cana as they are not over visited and people are friendly and happy. Just a suggestion if you want to save money 🙂

pPunta Cana is always cheap, you could easily go there anytime.

@sverstrepen: yes, the food and drinks are very expensive in hawaii. my friend went there to get married and they were shocked at the prices of even just a salad. not to mention, you will need to either rent a car or take taxis $$$. if you can fit it into the budget, i would go to hawaii.
if your hm budget is set and you don’t want to exceed it, do the ai in punta cana. the beaches there are gorgeous.

I’ve been to both. Punta Cana all inclusive for my wedding and Maui for my first anniversary. So here’s my thoughts.
Punta Cana is obviously gorgeous and has amazing beaches if that’s all you want to do. I did however find, and since you’ve been there you might think the same, that there isn’t a ton to do off resort. And 10 days at an all inclusive can be a LONG time and you get very sick of the food. However it’s obviously going to be the cheaper option and you will get your beach vacation. However consider the time of year you are going June/July – rainy season, possible hurricane season, etc.
Maui is stunning! And while people say it’s SOOO expensive, here’s my take. I think its expensive compared to mainland USA. However, as I see you are also from Canada, prices in Maui are comparable to Canadian prices. The only time we found prices to be really high was when we went to a hotel/resort area for food or drink. We rented a condo when we went from VRBO. Definitely the way to go and will save you a ton of money compared to a hotel. You can make some of your own meals if you want to save some money. Especially just like breakfasts and things add up when you eat out all the time. The great thing about Maui is there are about a million different beaches, all public. So you can go to a new beach and have a new experience every single day. There are also a million other things to do. And many of them don’t cost a lot of money. You will need to rent a car. However, when we went we went through priceline and ended up getting our car for $8/day – a full size car.
So overall my opinion for 10 day vacation would be to choose Maui. And you can make it into your budget if you try.

Maui was part of my Hawaii island-hopping honeymoon (also Big Island and Oahu) but yes, VERY expensive. With that said, it felt like a once-in-a-lifetime thing more than Punta Cana would because that’s closer. You have some amazing activities like sunrise on Haleakala and the Road to Hana, the upcountry was really lovely with vineyards and a surfing goat farm (!), and cute little towns like Paia. The west coast where everyone stays is extremely touristey and commercial with everything being REALLY expensive.

I agree with PuntaCanaBride – I didnt find Hawaii to be expensive at all and I’ve been twice. The Big Island and Maui. Yes it is more expensive that the mainland because every single thing is imported (with the exception of the pineapples lol). Maui is simply magical so you wont go wrong selecting this as your HM destination. Yes, you will definitely need a car and it will be worth it. The Road to Hana is treacherous especially if its raining but its a must have experience.
If you do decide to go to Maui – a well worth it dinner splurge is Mama’s House. All I will say is GO!
Now Punta Cana is absolutely fantastic as well but if I had to pick between the 2 – Hawaii is it for sure.
A great site for you to visit is tripadvisor – I swear by this site and it is the first place I go to when planning a trip. They have guides for the time of year you are planning to travel which can really help you in making the final decision.
Good luck and enjoy!

MAUI hands down 🙂 You can go to Punta Cana any time! Make this a special trip if the price is similar.
You can find restaurants that are not extremely expensive – or you can choose to eat at expensive places every night. You can take advantage of happy hour for drinks if you want to save somewhere.
You definitely do need a rental car to get around, there’s lots of activities all over the island so I imagine taking cabs would add up to a lot!
