This is my first time consulting the hive, and hive… I need your help.
FH and I booked our honeymoon to the Valentin Imperial Maya in the Riviera Maya last month. It wasn’t our first choice, but our first choice was a bit more of a stretch budget-wise so we decided to settle.
I’ve been looking at the photos and reading the reviews and have been generally excited up until last week. Now I feel absolutely disheartened.
You see, the past few weeks on tripadvisor.com, the negative reviews outnumber the positive, and the majority of them say they were disappointed and wouldn’t return. I’m so worried we made the wrong choice, and now FH and I are frantically considering our alternative options. We have the Cancel-for-any-reason insurance, so it’s not too late to switch.
Our other options include Secrets Capri (not really fond of how ‘small’ the resort feels) and Secrets Silversands (not really liking that tiny little beach). First choice is Secrets Maroma, but unless the price drops we won’t be able to do that.
Has anyone recently been to the Valentin? How was your stay? Are the recent reviews accurate? Or what are people’s thoughts/experiences on Secrets Capri and Silversands?

For my honeymoon, I went to Secrets Silversands. I thought it was great. I did read the reviews so I wasn’t expecting a 5 star hotel. I knew with my budget, I wouldn’t get something like that. I was very happy with where I went and I would definitely return if we went back to Cancun because it was a such a good deal. The beach I knew about so that did not surprise me. As for the other possible negative reviews on trip advisor, I made sure I was prepared, so I made the best of it. So like I said, I knew what to expect so I wasn’t upset or suprised when I got there.
I’ve never been to the resorts you are asking about but while I was going to some excursions, we did pick some people up at those resorts. The resort looked nice.
Oh, as for the beach at Silversands, it is small but most of the guests hand around the 5 or 6 pools. Also, I was told to bring water shoes if I wanted to go in the beach. I stayed in the pool and didn’t really go on the beach, but I heard it can be rocky which is why the beach shoes are nice to have. This is not a good resort if you want an amazing beach.

@yrret107 The Valentin has absolutely gorgeous grounds, but it seems like the service is a bit lacking.I don’t know if I’m being overly paranoid or not, haha.
Thanks for sharing your input! Was it still possible to swim or lounge at the beach, or is it too small for that?

@lullafly: I don’t know about swimming. My husband did take the kayaks out. I don’t think he complained about the beach. There are also nice beaches on both sides of the resort. You don’t have to stay on silversand’s beaches, although, it if you want to be served drinks, you have to stay.
There is definitely still a beach with lounge chairs. There’s about 100 lounge chairs on the beach when I went. (April 2010) I was told to get up early to get one. I got up at 8am twice. What sucks is some people get up early put towels on the chairs then leave to get breakfast or to sit by the pool. That was annoying. I got up at 8am and just read a book while the Darling Husband got some breakfast and brought it out to me. The staff does come around to pick up towels from the unattended beach chairs. Which I thought was good of them because it’s fair. We did get annoyed that some people had saved a lounge chair by the beach and the pool.
