Fiance and I don’t have a lot of money to spend on a honeymoon. We also don’t have a lot of time we can take off of work to go somewhere as I we both will be taking two weeks off and that’s it–the week of the wedding to get final things done and the week after for the honeymoon. As a result we decided we didn’t want to go somewhere far away or someplace tropical. My family has really tried to push the tropical idea, and while it sounds nice since we’ve NEVER been on vacation together before (never stayed in a hotel, etc), I just feel like it would be wayy to exhausting to try to pack to leave, and then come home and unpack. And for me and him, vacations sometimes are more tiring than just staying at home.
So, we are thinking about staying local. But with our honeymoon being in November I’m not sure what to do, either. Currently we live around 2 hours SW of Chicago and we’ve heard places like Galena and such are really nice places to get a hotel and stay there. I’ve been trying to look hotel information up for a B&B but I haven’t found anything I’m in love with.
Anyone on here gone on a honeymoon in the midwest/Illinois/or just locally? Any advice?
ETA: I’m not opposed to Chicago, but I’ve been there so much and it will be November that I’m worried it won’t be as much fun. We also got engaged in Chicago.

I was born and raised in Chicago so it gets my vote. There is soooo much to do there, and they have the best food ever. I think it would be a great honeymoon spot.

What about Starved Rock if you guys like the outdoors? Or there are beautiful places along Lake Michigan just into Michigan that would be nice – all the wineries in the SW, Saugatuck, Grand Haven. Or you could do an urban honeymoon – Chicago or Milwaukee. I’ve heard Door County in Wisconsin is beautiful as well.

I second Door County. Its like you’re in New England! Its so pretty up there 🙂 They have tons of cute B&Bs. Or you could go to Lake Geneva. Since i’m from WI I recommend that state 🙂

South Haven Michigan is very pretty too.

Check out Bernadine’s Stillman Inn in Galena. It’s our favorite place. We went on our first vacation there and 2 years later, he proposed there also. The owners, Dave and Bernadine, are fabulous. It feels as comfortable as being home, but much more luxurious. In November, it will be decorated for Christmas and the whole town will be just gorgeous. I recommend Vinny Venucchi’s (spelling?), Fried Green Tomatoes, and the Perry Street Brasserie. Perry Street is our most recent favorite. The owner cooks everything and the way it was explained to us, selects different things for the menu every day depending on what he can buy fresh that morning, including the desserts. Everything I had was absolutely fabulous. It was a very small romantic place.

@angel_baby_12_9:ooohh that sounds amazing!!
Anyone also been to Wisconsin Dells for a honeymoon? I think it might be fun to go to an indoor water park..

@SweetRose2011: I love Wisconsin Dells! I never went for a honeymoon, but I used to go all the time as a kid when I lived in MN and went camping there a few years ago. They have a lot of really fun indoor waterparks, and I’m sure that would be the off season so maybe there would be some good deals.
I’ve also been to Door County and agree there are some really cute B&Bs there, though it may be chilly to walk around the area.

@SweetRose2011:My FI’s parents actually went there for their honeymoon 30 years ago! The Kalahari is pretty cool – and I think they have a nice spa as well.
I actually grew up very close to Galena and I would recommend it as well. Vinny Vanucchi’s is amazing as are the chocolate shop and popcorn place (try Tiger Butter!) down the street.
Dubuque is another great option – the Hotel Julien (our reception site, yay!) is gorgeous and has a spa that includes different romance packages and things for couples. It really depends on what your interests are – relaxing, shopping, tourism, nature, history, etc.
Now I’m hungry for Italian and popcorn. Darn.
ETA: Ate my post!

Have you thought about staying at a State Park? Turkey Run State Park and Brown County State Park are beautiful (in Indiana).

One other place – I see the commercials for this place all the time. It’s up at the Dells so if you’re a spa fan it might be nice.

Two thumbs up to the poster who suggested Lake Geneva I grew up there, we currently live on the other side of the lake. Beautiful town just not too much to do for the honeymooners. I would suggest go to the Wisconsin Dells for a few days. Beautiful, and with all the tourist stuff to do theres always something going on.

If you go to the Dells there is this place called Sundara spa and it is AWESOME! My friends went there for their honeymoon and I’ve been there once and its so relaxing. I would recommend going there at least one night! Otherwise the Kalahari is pretty fun too. I just looked at your wedding date though and there might not be much going on in the dells or door county because its so late in the season….just an FYI.

def. Galena. It is BEAUTIFUL in the fall. There are small wineries, awesome restaurants, & the little town is adorable. Def. gets my vote!
