Lake Michigan.  There are a lot of quaint towns along the coast, Grand Haven and Ludington are my favorites and there are the Sleeping Bear Dunes further north.  The beaches are fantastic and just as good, if not better, than any beack along the Atlantic or Gulf.  Plus you don’t have to deal with salt water.

Have you looked into the Carolina coasts? They have some beautiful beaches, and the pictures show a lot of interesting architecture. What about a small town along CA Hwy 1? The views are absolutely gorgeous, and there are sea lions!

We go to Captiva, which is right off of Sanibal, every year. We went in January last year and it was a little chilly but it is a beautiful island. If you want to go to the beach, that is definitely the place to go.

For our honeymoon we went to Big Ceder in Missouri which is a beautiful place. It will be cold in January but you can stay in really romantic cabins. Very secluded. I would recommend it if you don’t mind cold weather.

South padre island (when it is not spring break!!), felt pretty exotic to me since so many people spoke Spanish as their primary language. I definitely felt like I was outside of the US! Are you looking for more private, quiet vacation, or exciting/touristy? A lot of people like Virginia beach, but that is definitely on the tourist end of the spectrum.
