I’ve never been to St. Martin or Puerto Rico but Fiance and I looked at PR last year for our annual vacation and the prices were really good plus it looks beautiful!

@ totheislnds – That’s where I am trying to get my Fiance to go!  Couples looks like an AMAZING resort!  He is worried about the crime in Jamaica, though.  I am trying to tell him that there is crime everywhere haha!

Has anyone experienced crime-type of situations when you went on a vacation?  I have been told that if you are in a resort area, then it’s pretty safe.  Is there truth to that?

I’m going to Puerto Rico this spring with my mom and sister, and the prices really aren’t that bad at all!  We like to be somewhere where it’s safe to go off the resort and explore.  I’ve also been to St. Martin, and it’s gorgeous and really fun, but the beaches aren’t as nice as they are at some other places.

My personal favorite tropical destination is St. John, USVI.  It’s so beautiful, the beaches are amazing, and most of the island is national park land, so there are hiking trails and tons of greenery.  The nightlife isn’t crazy though, so if you’re looking for someplace to go clubbing or whatever, it’s probably not ideal.  But if you just want to hang out, lay on beaches, snorkel, eat great food, and occasionally explore a ruin or something, it’s really the perfect place.

@Lindsaygooding: agree with you about ocho rios!!!  I eliminated Mexcio, Jamaica and Dominican all for reasons of safety for the time being.  We are looking into Antigua, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, St. Lucia.  I want to be able to leave the resort if I want to and feel safe.

I second Miss OBG…St. John is amazing.  I dont know if they have all-inclusives though, but there are some pretty fantastic villas on VRBO.  I also love St. Thomas.  I am DYING to stay anywhere in the BVI.  I visted several islands on a day trip from St. Thomas and fell in love.

Most recently, I stayed at Sandals Royal Bahamian in the Bahamas and had a fabulous time.  It was everything we had hoped.  The only thing that disappointed us was the weather and you can’t exactly control the weather. lol  I would go back to a Sandals in a heartbeat!

@Lindsaygooding: Machetes are normal tools in the Caribbean.  Yes, they can be used as weapons, but they are also an effective tool to clear brush or chop things (not humans).  This was their original purpose and is still widely used that way.  I don’t want to diminish your feelings, but I wanted to clear up what you may have actually seen.

Also, with few exceptions, the majority of Caribbean nationals are very poor.  An economy based in tourism lends itself to that.  Especially when tourism ownership has been dominated by foreigners.  Ok enough with my social justice comments and on to your question.

I think PR and St. Maarten are lovely choices but not if you want AI.  You are better off with Jamaica, DR, or Mexico (pacific or yucatan doesn’t matter).  These places really do AI.  You can also find some in the Bahamas, Aruba has some, Panama just opened a new one.  A personal recommendation: We went to the Dreams Villamagna in Puerto Vallarta and I have nothing but good things to say.  Oh those drinks…

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

We stayed at the Excellence in Punta Cana.  It was a very nice all inclusive with lots of restaurant choices.

If you stay there though, I would HIGHLY recommend the upgrade to the Excellence Club.  You get a lot of special touches, extras and amenities that are totally worth the extra money.  http://www.excellence-resorts.com/guest-suites/excellence-club

The island itself is poor as most Carribbean countries are, but we never felt unsafe and the country is absolutley beautiful.

@Lindsaygooding:  My Fiance won’t go to Mexico, either, because of all the crap that’s going on.  Which I really hate that there is so much crime right now because there are several places in Mexico I would LOVE to go visit!

Go to Puerto Rico! It has beautiful beaches but also a lot of history. I do recommend staying outside of an all-inclusive, though. This way you have more flexibility on where to go and can check out more beautiful beaches, historical sites and the rainforest. Granted, I’m biased since I’m from there. 😉
