cincakes:  I have heard Hawaii to be expensive for food/drinks/outings. Family and friends that have gone have spent between 10-15k total on the trip.

What are you looking for in a beach area? Private? close to shops? Nightlife? Resort? Only in California though?

San Fransico and San Diego are expensive. Palm Springs is not by the beach, it is cheaper though. Especially in the summer when it is blazing hot out. PCH is a gorgous drive from Santa Barbra to San Fransico. Solvang, San Simone, Redwoods are pretty as well. They are not as popular tourist destinations so they are more financially feasible. If you like camping there are plenty of options. Santa Barbra campsite is right on the beach, very pretty. Also, there are many B&Bs and the wineries in the middle of no where tend to be the best ones.

What about a cruise from LA to Santa Catalina Island? I’ve seen some that aren’t overly expensive.

Catalina is always really awesome! It’s a sleepy little town with not much to do, but there’s good food, some attractions and excursions, and they just recently renovated Descanso Beach to feel more resort-like. You also feel like you’re “away from it all” without really having to travel too far (1 hour ferry ride from SoCal).

What time of the year is your honeymoon? I only ask because Palm Springs is brutal in the summer.

cincakes:  A cruise is pretty cheap. And your food is included in the price.

cincakes:  In California, I’d suggest Carmel, Santa Barbara, or Napa Valley for romance. Areas are known to be pricey though.

Not sure what your budget is exactly, but if you’re willing to venture out, I’d suggest heading down to Mexico (Cabo, Cancun, Tulum); you can find some great deals that are all-inclusive.

Anywhere in the Caribbean is going to be less than Hawaii.  You can do an all inclusive hotel that will include all your food, drinks and alcohol and it still be very reasonable.  My Fiance and I looked at it for my birthday and with airfare and hotel (all inclusive) was going to be about $600 per person for 5 days.

Sorry, just re-read that you were looking for California options.

I was recently in San Francisco for business and it was cold (to me)! I was told it doesn’t warm up much in the summer, so I wouldn’t want in that water. 🙂

But, we did a Napa/Sonoma tour that was fantastic! If you like wine, that would be a fun trip. Very beautiful and can be romantic. Maybe try to find a bed and breakfast out there.

cookiebird:  I am wondering the same question! And what time of year were you looking at? The cheapest I’ve found is like $900/pp which still isn’t horrible.
