You should look into Cairns if you’d like to see the Great Barrier.  I was there about 7 years ago (while studing abroad) & went scubba diving, it was amazing! I also recommend checking out the Whitsunday Islands. I went on a three day sailboat ride around the Islands & they are absolutetly beautiful.  Also, try looking into Frasier Island north of Brisbane & Surfer’s Paradise just south of Brisbane.  Surfer’s reminded me of Miami, but it was one of my favorite places I visited. There is so much to do in Sydney, you could easily spend a week there, but I was almost overwhelmed by it’s size. I’ve also heard Melbourne is also an awesome city, but I never made it there. Good luck, I’m sure you’ll have a blast whatever you decide to do!

Fiance wanted to go to Australia soooo bad!  Too bad it’s the middle of “winter” there when we get married!

@sweets35:  I think we’re most likely going to Italy… flying into France, then going from Northern Italy to Naples (he has close family there).

If it’s not that, then we may do a week in Tahiti/Bora Bora/Morea…not sure!

@sweets35:  December is going to be hot. I’m over in Perth (other side of the continent) but we get up to 42 degrees Celsius easy on Christmas day most years. Cairns will be hotter than Sydney and probably muggy too, since it is monsoon season up there. You should expect rains around that time in north Queensland. Not just any rains, but tropical storms too. Not trying to change your mind, just educating you ๐Ÿ™‚

Melbourne is amazing, and much cooler. We have been to both Sydney and Melbourne, and my pick will always be Melbourne of the two. Way great shopping! Especially the week between Boxing day and New Years.

You will have a ball either way you decide

@nephthysa:  When I think Australia I think box jelly fish…for obvious reasons…but I’m a big beach person so I guess that’s why…

Also that Australia is the #1 country for the most poisonous/venmous species in the world!

Yikes!

But it IS a beautiful country, and their accents are yummy ๐Ÿ™‚

@BellaDee:  Yup, we have all the poisonous nasties here ๐Ÿ˜€ – box jellyfish, the taipan snake, red back and white tail spiders, sharks, funnel web spiders, dropbears – I mean, even the cuddly koalas have chlamydia! Lol I love Oz!

@sweets35: please feel free to ask away any questions you have – the local girls may have more detailed info but I am more than happy to try to help out

It will be hot, and muggy up in Queensland in December.

I recommend Tasmania!  It’s an amazing place which is usually forgotten.

The Gold Coast is ok, I’ve lived here most of my life but for great beaches North NSW is better.  Surfers Paradise has a very dangerous beach with plenty of rips.

The Gold Coast has plenty of theme parks and many hidden treasures like Tamborine Mountain.

I agree – as a local, summertime in Nth Queensland (Cairns, Whitsundays, Great Barrier Reef etc) is a bitch – not just heat but crazy humidity. And it’s the wet season! It is beautiful though. And depending on what you’re wanting to do – swimming, snorkelling etc you might not mind the weather? Just pack sunscreen!

@sweets35:  Australia is huge, and Tasmania is a long way from Cairns (which is where you would be to see the Great Barrier Reef) I dont think you could happily do both in 2 weeks, Even though it is the wet season in Cairns in december, it will still be nice! ANd it will be lovely in Sydney….You have to go to Sydney!

Sydney to the Great Barrier Reef would be a great road trip, although I’d be guessing at the time taken. It’s about 10 hours drive Sydney to Brisbane then the same again to the Great Barrier Reef area so you could do it I think. It would be a shame to miss Melbourne though, it is a fantastic city. Everywhere will probably be crazy hot though, hopefully you are used to hot weather! With just 2 weeks there is so much you could see in Australia, I’m not sure I’d make Tasmania a priority (no offense Tasmanians).

I’m from 2 hours north of Sydney and am getting married in the Great Barrier Reef area in September so you’re really looking at my neighbourhood!

@sweets35:  My sister and Brother-In-Law live in AUS and the summer after high school (2009) my fiance (boyfriend at the time!) went to visit them. We were in the Brisbane, Queensland areaand it was BEAUTIFUL! We did the great barier reef as well as visiting Whitehaven Beach and Hamilton Island- definite must-do’s if you have the time and money! We also took a trip to Sydney where we went to the aquarium and it was phenomenal! I also strongly reccomend a relaxing weekend in the Mt. Tambourine area- they have shops and restaruants all along the mountain and it’s GORGEOUS and so neat! We went for 5 weeks, and hardly felt we were able to do it all! Have fun! ๐Ÿ™‚
