My fiance and I are trying to go there (we are having visa issues so we’re still figuring out if its possible). We are thinking of doing 10 days, part of the time in Santorini and part of the time on 2 of the smaller islands. I’ve looked into pricing and Santorini is pretty pricey but once you get onto the smaller islands, you can find little bed and breakfasts and things like that for really good prices. So it really depends on what you’re looking for in Greece! πŸ™‚

I’ve been to Greece and it wasn’t really any pricier than most of Europe, in fact it was cheaper than France and England.

It’s definitely going to be more expensive if you want to spend a long time on the more popular islands.

My advice would be to look into some of the smaller islands that are less well known. They are equally beautiful but aren’t as touristy and might not have 5 star accomodations, but if you’re trying to save money that’s the way to go. I haven’t found any hotels in Europe that are really at the same level as US hotels for similar prices. To get similar service to even a Marriott over there you have to pay triple what you would here, so just be prepared to not spend an inordinate amount of time in your hotel and read reviews.

Then I’d say, do a few days on an island and then do some touring on the main land. Athens is a really cool city and some of the old quaint towns up north and along the coast are amazing. Don’t count the mainland out because of dreams of white walls and blue roofs πŸ˜€

Edit: I didn’t need a Visa, as long as you aren’t staying more than a couple weeks I don’t think you need one. Unless things have changed since I went.

Mrs Star went to Greece, she did a really thorough and detailed honeymoon recap with lots of pictures, you should check it out over on the blog.

We were thinking of Greece, our plan was to rent a small villa or apartment and do mostly day trips from there but in the end we decided on the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain. What time of year are you thinking of going? Greece is swelteringly hot in July and August and I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you love the heat of course.
