Ohh Provence is lovely!! How much time do you have? I would recommend also exploring Nice and Avignon. They’re all very accessible by train, so if you flew into Paris or another major city, you can travel from place to place by train. When I backpacked around Europe I stayed in hostels, so I don’t have any hotel recs, but I know you will have a great time!

I went rock climbing in Provence years ago, and it was amazing. We climbed in The Verdon (https://www.google.com/search?q=verdon+gorge&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=NXS&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=Jt08UejIG4PNqgGI3YHIBg&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1067&bih=555#imgrc=_), and went through all of the little towns between Aix-en-Provence and La Palud on the way there. I don’t remember the names of all of the towns we stopped in, but I really liked Sisteron (https://www.google.com/search?q=sisteron+france&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=IEn&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=it08UfnkKMqFrAHE3IAI&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1067&bih=555). I’d recommend renting a car for a few days and exploring the area. We were young, and didn’t have much money, a plan, or a car, so we did a lot of hitchiking, which you probably don’t want to do on your honeymoon 🙂

I spent about a month in Aix and Avignon.  I LOVE Aix.  It is so quaint and has lovely farmers markets most days, musicians in the street, flowers galore.  I could live there forever.  It reminded me of one of the smaller cute arrondissements in Paris.  I took a day bus-trip to Marseilles.  I had been to Nice before. Other people like Marseilles but I found it a little scary.  I was alone and if you wander too far in Marseilles you will end up in areas that remind you of some bombed out place in the Middle East.  I felt very unsafe.  So I would say Marseilles could be skipped.  Nice is nice for a visit though.
