I live near there and we go all the time for outlet mall shopping and Busch Gardens.  I’m not sure if I would consider it a good honeymoon destination, though…   The Colonial Williamsburg colony thing is pretty neat and Busch Gardens will be open on weekends… the Virginia Beach Zoo is pretty nice and not too far from there.  What kinds of things do you want to do?

I grew up in Yorktown, down the road, and have worked at both Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg.

If you like history, it’s a great place to visit.  I’d recommend touring the historic triangle of Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg– I believe you can get a pass that allows admission to all three sites.  Busch Gardens is good fun, too, and there is a huge outlet mall (Prime Outlets Williamsburg).

Other things to do in the area, with a little bit of travel:

  • Visit Richmond (about an hour northwest, if you take 95S, you’ll pass through on your way to/from Wmbg), the state capitol and capitol of the confederacy.  Lots of things to see and a ton of cute shops and places to eat– I went to college at VCU, Go Rams!

  • Go to the beach (Virginia Beach/Norfolk, about 1hr 20 mins southeast).  Besides the beach itself, there is the VA Beach Aquarium, Norfolk Zoo and Nauticus.

There are lots of great places to eat in Williamsburg besides the typicaly touristy staples you will find on Route 60/Richmond Road.  As far as places to stay, check out the Colonial Williamsburg properties for some really stellar options, but they can sometimes be pricey.  However, I have seen a LOT of Groupon/Living Social deals recently for Williamsburg hotels– check into that and you might score a great deal!  Feel free to PM me with direct questions, have fun!

Mrs. Wizard and her husband did a honeymoon in VA Beach and a day in Williamsburg. She did a couple of posts about it that have good suggestions for things to do.

@nl:  I say you just make a trek from VB west to Richmond!  You can do Williamsburg in a day, Busch Gardens in a day, Visit Jamestown/Yorktown, then come to Richmond (home for me!) where there’s tons to do!

I tried to convince my Fiance to go to Williamsburg in our honeymoon!  He just laughed, but as a history teacher, I really want to go. 🙂

I grew up in the next town over.  PP have given really good suggestions!  I would definitely stay at a B&B- for the love of God, don’t stay at Great Wolf Lodge.  It’s tourist hell.  If you are interested in antiques, the Williamsburg Antique Mall is pretty good.

Oh, and eat at Pierce’s Pitt.  I miss their pulled pork BBQ so much.

I did the ghost tour in Williamsburg.  Not exactly a honeymoon activity but I had fun if you like that kind of thing 🙂

ohemmeg has some great suggestions. Depending on the time of year, spending a night at the Great Wolf Lodge is a lot of fun. We have done that twice – yes it is geared towards kids and families but the staff is wonderful and it’s a lot of fun to ride water slides, the lazy river, go on the FlowRider, play mini golf, and walk around the neat building. One night is enough and they have nice suites with jacuzzis although a regular room is also very nice.

Another fun thing to do is called Go Ape! It’s a ropes course with ziplines and was just opened in Williamsburg recently.
