I’m looking into booking our honeymoon (right now thinking French Polynesia – Moorea and Bora Bora). I was wondering how most people booked their honeymoons — did you go to a travel agency, through a website, or do it all yourself? Is there a big price difference between the options?
If people booked it through a website, can you tell me which site and whether or not you recommend it?

We went through Orbitz! We haven’t gone yet so we don’t know how it will work out, but we got a great deal on our airfare/hotel/rental car. We initially tried travel agents but they really weren’t very helpful. Maybe it depends on where you’re going; we’re just going to Hawaii, so it doesn’t involve a lot of legwork to prepare like it would for your destination!

Have you checked out Costco? They have great hotel & air packages for French Polynesia.

I generally DIY on the traveling, but it may or may not save your money. Travel agencies tend to have better deals as they get group rates, at the same time you have to generally stay where they have these rates (so less selection). There are other cost which can be incurred by travel agencies, such as fees for ticketing, etc. So just be informed.
When I DIY travel I do a consult a lot in tripadvisor. I swear by the DK Eye Witness books and Lonely Planet travel books. They are both fantastic! The DK books are great for pictures and short brief descriptions. The Lonely Planet is better for unique, offbeat locations, cheaper dining/lodging, but no pictures 🙁
My family has booked trips in the past from the following two agencies and have had phenomenal results from both:
Gate1 — http://www.gate1travel.com/
Escapes Unlimited — http://www.escapesltd.com/
Another to check is GAP Adventures — http://www.gapadventures.com/ (I have never used them but I have heard great things about them)
Moorea and Bora Bora are popular honeymoon destiations so surf the boards a bit and of course the bees (ie Mrs. Tiramisu), for other great suggestions.
