It is absolutely safe.  A “pill period” is actually not a real period.  A better name for it would be “withdrawal bleeding.”  Scientists who created birth control created the withdrawal week only because they thought women would be more likely to take birth control pills that had it.  There is no medical need for withdrawal bleeding.  My only warning to you is that if you skip several “pill periods,” you may experience some spotting.  In that case, just take a week off, and you should go back to normal!  Lastly, keep in mind that you will need more prescriptions written, and technically you’ll be paying more money for the pills by skipping the placebo week.
