Hello Hive – I haven’t posted in a looong time and I sure do miss you gals.
I need you help
DH and I are leaving 1 week from today for our Bora Bora / Moorea honeymoon and I am stumped on what SPF to use for my face. My skin isn’t too sensitive however I do break out with the regular Banana Boat SPF’s and I prefer not to spend more than $20.
Tell me PLS what SPF’s do you use on your face?

I never use any SPF greater than 15 anywhere on my body (including my face) which keeps me from burning. I like the Hawaiian Tropic sunscreens alot. Have you tried those?

I’m sure you are going to laugh, but I use SPF 85+ on my face. I use the Neutrogena sunscreen that protects against both UVA + UVB rays. Admitedly, I am very paranoid of the sun.

the most important thing is to get a sunscreen that protects from UVA. I usually get the drugstore brand for face sunscreens- which are non-oily. They are smaller and cost more, but I only used them on my face, and then use regular sunscreen everywhere else. Typically, the face sunscreens are 50 or higher spf, although I have read that there really isn’t much difference between anything above 30

@arclee: I’ve read that also…but I still use a really high SPF!

You should always use at least 20 SPF. You can’t get damage even if you don’t burn. I like Coppertone Sport the best. I have pretty sensitive skin and it doesn’t sting and it’s sweat proof.
If you want a specialty face one, I would suggest going to Sephora. There are a lot of serum-type sunscreen that are really light. But I still like my Coppertone Sport the best!

Awesome resource: the Environmental Working Group has rated sunscreens for both level of sun protection AND toxicity of chemicals. Here is a link to their highest-rated sunscreens:

I have bought the Neutrogena before and it literally hurts my face! I’ve tried it twice and I’ve had to wash it off because it stings. I’ve heard the same from other people (but for many it’s fine).

@mightywombat: Um thank you!!! That is awesome!
@jackie-o: No, I don’t think so. It gets absorbed fairly quickly. Some sunscreens make me break out also, but theirs does not.

I second or third the vote for Neutrogena– I use the Ultra Sheer kind (50 spf) on my face. It’s not greasy at all. And even though I have the stinging problems with other lotions (including some of the other Neutrogenas), this one doesn’t sting me at all.

I’m not sure if this fits in your budget… but I use Dermalogica skincare and use the SPF 30 booster to protect my face from the sun. Its not waterproof so you have to reapply after swimming, but I’ve never broken out and its actually good for your skin.
