There was a post about the Mexico unrest thing and honeymoon plans recently…  Here it is:

If you are really set against Mexico, though, I might look at Hawaii, Aruba, the Dominican Republic, and other places in the Caribbean as those are often cheaper destinations.  If you look at discount sites like Orbitz or Travelocity they sometimes have very cheap deals.  Also, Sandals has a  65% off coupon on their site right now.  You can only use it for specific locations, but that would make the trip very cheap!  Other discount all-inclusive sites:

I highly recommend Puerto Rico, it’s beautiful, romantic & so inexpensive! and if you go you must visit El Runque rain forest – it’s breathtaking!

To stay within your budget I would check your local ads and online for timeshare weeks. My family is big on timeshares, when we don’t use them we sell the weeks, usually to friends, but people do post in the paper. It will take more research, but you can usually get a really good deal on a nice hotel! Good Luck!

Keep your eye out for good deals. With the turn in the economy and percieved instability in Mexico, there are bound to be good deals to keep the tourists coming. Don’t get discouraged!

I have  heard fantastic things about DR!!  I have always wanted to go, but we haven’t made it there yet.  I love Dominican people, food and music so I think you will have a great time!  Nice pick.
