From another site:

An honorary bridesmaid/groomsman, etc. is someone who for some reason is unable to attend the wedding but who would have been in the wedding party if they had been able to attend. An example would be a sister/brother/friend who is deployed in the military and who can’t get leave to come home for the wedding

I think it is a very thoughtful idea.

Are you having programs? You would include him there, perhaps adding that his deployment prevented him from being present.

If you are not having programs, you could display his pic and have the MC also mention him.

My SO was in the military, and when he got deployed, our friends got married, and he could not be aa groomsmen as planned. So the groomsmen gift Sean gave all of the guys, he got as well personalized with “honorary groomsmen” under it instead of “groomsmen” and at the guestbook table they had his army picture(picture in Blue jacket in front of US flag everyone gets done) mentioning him, wishing he could be there

@prettypincushion:  I thought it was nice, I was not dating him at the time, but I saw the wedding pictures at our friends house and he has his Groomsmen gifs at our home now, sitting in our curio cabinet.
