Yesterday was a big day for Justin. His intracranial pressure (ICP) was elevated too high to be controlled my medication so the decided to operate. They removed a part of his skull to help relieve the pressure inside his brain. This was a terrifying few hours for us to say the least. We found out later that his neurosurgeon is the head of his department and is internationally known for his work. The neurosurgeon felt that the surgery was successful, and although his brain injury is very serious, he did give us some hope for his possible recovery.
Today Justin’s ICP stabalized at an acceptable level. He was running a fever throughout the day and he is still sedated. Although Justin is still not awake, we were able to see him move a bit in response to pain when tested by the nurse. He also sometimes coughs against his breathing tube, and we even got to see his eyes open for a moment. This was very encouraging for us. He is running a fever, so the neurosurgeons want to keep him stable for a few more days before considering the surgery he needs on the compound fracture in his leg. His neurosurgeon saw him tonight and the nurse said he was very please by Justin’s ICP number.
I can’t express how much your support has meant to me during these difficult days. I haven’t been able to read or respond to all of your messages, but please know that I feel your love. I have received so much support from my family, Justin’s family, and a huge network of friends and coworkers.
Someone here posted a link to a Facebook page for a little boy with a traumatic brain injury and it gave me the idea to greate a secret group to send updates on Facebook. I started the group with about 10-15 friends and family members. Those people have invitied others and the group has grown to 70 members. Justin has so much love coming his way.
I got a fortune cookie with my lunch from the hospital cafeteria today and this was my fortune:

A note on the removal of a piece of Justin’s skull… my dad had several benign tumors removed over the course of 40 years. At one point, while I was in high school, he had a large piece of his forehead from above his hairline down to his eyebrow removed. He looked terrible the first few weeks, with huge black eyes and a shunt (I believe that’s what it was). When he came home, his head was depressed and he had to be cautious, but~ he was mobile, happy, and okay. Later, it was corrected. I just want to share that bit of his story with you. I’m sending prayers and positive thoughts to you and your family!
Tears in my eyes over your fortune cookie~ amazing!!
