@spotted_giraffe:  I work in a jewelry store, so I’ll try to answer this…  You will always make more money on a private-party sale than on selling to a jeweler.  The reason is that jewelers buy wholesale, so their offer will be at wholesale or below.  Diamonds under a carat are readily available in the market, so unless it is a perfect or near-perfect diamond, you will not receive an offer close to its retail value, and usually well below wholesale.  Still, if you are not attached to the sentiment, it could be worth using trading in the diamond(s) towards one that you really love (as opposed to having it sit in a jewelry box).  We always recommend getting offers from a few different jewelers and taking the best one.  Or, if you can, sell the ring/diamonds to another person who would use them for a higher price than you’re offered.  Hope this helps!  🙂
