Hi bees, I hope you can answer my question about dealing with jewelers on trading in diamonds, it’s kind of random but here goes..
So I am not engaged and currently my boyfriend and I are looking at rings. I’ve found settings I like in a local jewelry store, and browsed the online brand and am getting some settings not displayed in store delivered so I can try those on too. So all’s good on the setting side..
On the diamond side, my BF has been offered a ring from his mom so that i can use the diamond. Story is it’s a random cousin’s who used to own a jewelry store, and it’s good quality but not too big (I dont know any of the specs, but that’s what he said). He also said there’s another ring she offered, which has a smaller stone but still good quality, So she said we could use either one and place in the setting, or see about selling it or trading in two for a bigger one. No emotional or family attachment here, just something she ended up with.
My question is..do we bring these into the jewelers this weekend to see what they can do about it when we look at settings? Have any of you traded in diamonds, do they accept (or does it vary?) Or do you get a really crummy deal so it’s not worth it? Or should we just go to a “we buy loose diamonds” store and see what we can get for them? I’m not opposed to just using the stones there, but I just want to understand our options.
Help? I don’t want to go into this jewelry store looking like cheap-os trying to barter our goods, but we do want a good deal.
Thanks thanks in advance!
