Hi Bees! We are doing a hot cocoa, apple cider, and coffee bar at our reception and I am trying to decide if we should provide individual packages of hot cocoa or if we should pre mix and put it in an insulated dispenser.
We have the stainless steel insulated dispensers thanks to my mom who used to own a restaurant. I’m worried about the cocoa separating if we pre mix it. I am already leaning toward making mulled apple cider and having that in the dispenser instead of the individual packages. I think it will just taste better. I am mainly worried about the mess the hot cocoa packages will make when our guests make their drinks, plus there would be extra garbage from the packets.
What do you think? Individual packets for convenience or make home made hot cocoa?

We’re having hot cocoa at our reception too and it will be pre-mixed! You’re right about worrying about the mess it would make having guests mix their own.

I would rather have it pre-mixed. The packets are messy and seem kind of cheap for some reason. If people were at your house you wouldn’t give them a drink packet, right?

I would go with home-made, especially if you have a way of serving it. It tastes better than the dehydrated mixes any day. 🙂

I think the hot chocolate and cider bar sounds like a great idea (and makes me want some of my own!)
I agree that packets don’t seem to fit the occasion. If you are worried about separation, maybe hot chocolate on a stick could be an option? There is a place in NYC called Popbar that sells it, and it is AMAZING. It wouldn’t be messy, and all you’d have to provide is the steamed milk:
It would also be really unique, and I bet your guests would be impressed (I know I would!) 🙂
I know there are tons of recipes out there for it too.

I’m planning on somewhat the same thing and I’m leaning towards the hot chocolate on a stick option because it is versatile. Someone can eat the fudge plain, or mix it with the hot milk, or even put it in their coffee for a mocha. There will be no mess from it and it seems like a classier alternative. Plus I found this recipe:
It seems really quick and easy. There are also options for differnt “flavors” like rolling the fudge in crushed peppermint candy or making the fudge out of white chocolate instead of milk.

I’d say definitely don’t provide individual packets. They’re messy, and to be honest, they don’t taste all that great – there’s always gross filmy stuff on top. Definitely either go with pre-mixed or the stick idea!

love the stick idea, i think i might do that too!

Mmm sounds delicious! We had a coffee bar at our wedding, and our guests loved it! I agree that for convenience and cleanliness, I’d go with the homemade!

Wow, that hot chocolate on a stick is awesome! Definitely choose that or the pre-mixed stuff. Yum!

Thanks for that link! I’ve bought them, but I find they’re stupid expensive for hot chocolate so I don’t do it very often. I am so making these for our Jul party. 🙂

So after posting the hot chocolate on a stick yesterday, I could not stop thinking about it, and I convinced my husband to go after our anniversary dinner (how has it been one month already? eeep!)
He got the white chocolate, and i got the milk chocolate, and it was just as amazing as I remembered it:
