@SoonToBeSimmons:  This will vary from chain to chain.  My FH works for a Canadian chain and he is actually the person who sets the rates for his specific hotel location, he sets the rates with expedia, hotels.com etc.  With some hotels – the larger ‘luxury’ brands, calling the hotel will likely be better, with your Holiday Inn, Best Western etc conveneince hotels you may have better luck calling the call centre/national number.

Interesting! My hotel chain (the Westin) only books blocks locally out of their group sales/events offices – my mom was in charge of it and she even called their national line first, but they directed her to our local agent. We got a great deal, though – I think it’s $110/night compared to the $300+ quoted on the website! This is good to know for others who might have similar luck as you, though!
