We already booked our honeymoon – we leave the day after the wedding. We are going to Greece and are hopping from Athens – Santorini – Crete – Athens. We just booked the standard double rooms and were wondering how we should go about asking for an upgrade. Should we just ask when we get there and check in? (pull the “We’re on our honeymoon!” card) Or should we inquire ahead of time? We don’t want to spend any more. What have other bees done? Any tips? Thanks!

@808mjm202: ask when you get there, you only get this card once.. USE IT! Just a side note- Athens is pretty gross lol Most of the people who live in athens are not actually greek.. so keep expectations low.. but Santorini and crete are BEAUTIFUL! have fun!

Well I didn’t want to be so bold as to flat out ask… but we did make sure to tell our hotel when we were checking in that we were on our honeymoon (and I also put it in the “notes” section of our online booking reservation) and it made absolutely no difference– no upgrade. We actually kind of hated the first room we were in and I did ask to move the next day and that point we were put into a very nice room that I think was probably an upgrade bc it was ocean-view? But I doubt that was because we were on our honeymoon.

@MrsNeutrino: Thanks for the tip! I was just worried since we are hopping and staying in 4 different hotels, if we could pull that card 4 times. haha. But I guess they won’t know that. I think we will give it a try.

You’re lucky that you’re in Europe – if you try that in on a tropical island, everyone is on their honeymoon, so you wouldn’t have any success ;-). But, you’ve got an ok shot at it in Europe!

We asked for an upgrade when we were in Vegas. It was just a normal vacation and they said sure 🙂 I think that might happen a lot in Vegas though, not sure.

Some hotels offer a promo code that will upgrade a honeymoon couple. But you have to bring a copy of your marriage certificate.
Upgrades are always based on availability, and the mood the person who is reviewing your request happens to be in that day.

@Bliss Honeymoons: Thanks for the tip! I heard about bringing your marriage certificate, but since we are leaving immediately after the wedding – we will not have our certificate yet (the officiant has to mail it into the courts and that can take up to a week, and then we have to request a certified copy).

I think it depends on the hotel, but it never hurts to ask. I would definitely ask if there are any complimentary upgrades at each one you go to. Maybe have the groom ask and say that it would really mean a lot to have just a slightly better view or something since you’re on your honeymoon. You could also email/call them ahead of time and ask if there’s anything “special” they can do since it’s your honeymoon. If they offer you something for a cost, you can always decline, but at least then they’ll be aware ahead of time and you never know….Keep in mind, if they do upgrade you significantly, it’s always nice to tip the person who helped you.
