Haruyou:  I forgot to add that we never heard the bells or things like that.  My mom worked night shift for many years and had to sleep during the day and she never had any issues.

ButterflyButterfly:  I used to live right next to an elementary school (on the side just like yours!) but I rented. I lived there for 2 years and never had a problem. I never heard the kids or the bells.

I worked 8-5 so I was never around for the “school traffic” even though I had to park on the street.

The only annoying thing was some kids (the youngest ones) get picked up at lunch, and I worked close enough to come home and lunch and it was so hard to park near my house with all those parents parked there waiting for their kids.

But you said parking isn’t an issue for you so that’s good!

Never heard any excessive noise at all. And for the record, I really don’t like kids and it didn’t bother me at all to live there.

Haruyou:  Personally I would love it. We looked at some townhouses that backed up to a park area, near an elementary school. I was thrilled because (1) tons of extra play space if we have kids (we live in the city so big yards are impossible/expensive to come by), (2) its yard space we don’t have to take care of because our taxes do, (3) I can’t think of a better possible commute for the *future* kids for school, (4) it’s really safe because of the extra guards/ street lamps/safety precautions,  and (5) i liked the sense of being in the community, attending a community school, knowing the neighbors, etc.

I never really consider noise as a huge issue, because we live in the city anyway and a school is probably quieter for the hours that we are home then a restaurant, bar, or the other options we might have to deal with.

We ultimately didn’t get the place because it needed a lot of remodelling, but I’ve always regretted it.

I didn’t read all the replies but I’m going to go against the majority I read and say if you love th house, go for it. If it was older kids I would hesitate but elementary wouldn’t bother me, and will be great for your future kids to just cross the road to get to school! Children playing noise doesn’t bother me.

I live about 6 houses down from an elementary school. The only thing that becomes somewhat annoying is people parking in front of my housefor games, carnivals or open houses. But, no one ever blocks my driveway, and you already stated that wasn’t going to be a problem. I can sometimes hear the PA system if my windows of open (so and so to the office please, etc…). I usually can’t understand what they are saying, but I can hear something. I hear the bells for school, lunch and recess, but there’s no reason that would bother me. Every Friday after school, they play “Happy Trails” loudly over the PA. It makes me smile.

If the house is what you want, and the price is good, don’t let the school be an issue.

I live a little down the street from an elementary school.  Yes, their is a lot of traffic at key points of the day.  But, I’m rarely around when the kids are getting picked up and dropped off, so it doesn’t bother me too much. For whatever reason I feel safer being so close to an elementary school.

The noise and traffic would drive me bananas within a week. No way! But it’s what you think that’s important, not us!

We are a child-free couple and live opposite a school. Traffic has never been an issue for us, but I guess it depends on the time of day you are travelling. The only issue I have is with the lawnmower guy who fires up at 7am every Monday – I am a shift worker and have come to hate that guy so much! Noise from kids has never been an issue for us.
