House guests over Christmas with a newborn and toddler

    You are not being unreasonable, yes he should have consulted with you first. But if it is going to happen, just make sure, right from the beginning of the visit, that this is a ‘pitch in’ type of visit. You will not be waiting on them while they sit back and enjoy a vacation.

    Put the newborn and your toddler first, and interact with your inlaws when you can. They can take care of their own needs, they can cook dinner if you don’t have time; watch the toddler while you tend to the baby. They don’t have to wash windows or mop floors (unless they spill something, then they mop the floor), but they do have to tend to themselves. 

    If they go for it, great. If not, they can get a hotel room.
