do a quick search of them and check out some of the reviews that pop up — it’s pretty risky to order a dress overseas, simply because of the lack of personal control you have over a dress you never get to see/touch, made by someone you never get to speak with.

House of brides is based in IL. They are totally legit. I got my Watters dress from there at about half the price it would have been in a salon. I was iffy at first too but I did the following to make sure I was getting the EXACT dress I had found in stores:

1. Spoke to my sister (lived in IL and was just in a wedding where they got their Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses from HoB and had a wonderful experience)

2. Looked at the Watters website and researched if HoB was a licenced retailer of their dresses (this step is really important so you know its not a knock off dress and will be what you want)

3. Called their customer service hotline about returns. They will return a dress that has a manufacturer flaw but not if you order the wrong size.

Their sizing charts are different for each designer, and extremly accurate. if you do choose to order your dress from HoB then remember to have someone else measure you and order based on your largest measurement. (i.e. even though everywhere else on me was a size 4 I ordered a size 6 bc of my hips) I love love love my dress! Great experience with House of Brides!

Their customer service stinks.

We ordered the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses from there and the color representation on their website did not match up with what we got and they would not let me return them.  And we’re talking that the sash was two toned and didn’t match the dress.  And it was all grey!  Not hard to match a sash to a dress.


Yes, you save money but personally it’s not worth it in my opinion.

I bought bridesmaid dresses through them. I can’t comment on the quality because the dresses are three weeks late so far, and no one is responding to my emails. So that’s the beginning of my review. Yell

look at what I found on Watters website about online stores that sale these wedding gowns for those who think that some online stores like HOB and such are licenced retailer.

The Internet is the perfect place to see what’s out there and narrow down your choices but we strongly recommend the purchase of your dress be made through an authorized Watters retail store to avoid many of the common pitfalls of bargain shopping for your big day. We have heard countless stories of cheap knock-offs sold by fly by night businesses or our dresses sold in less than perfect condition by middlemen posing as authorized dealers.


Buying from an unauthorized dealer can ruin your wedding day and cost you more than you “bargained” for. Here are some of the problems you could be faced with:

  • An incorrect style or size
  • Wrong or different dye lots
  • Defective garments
  • Garments that have been worn
  • Expensive “unforeseen” shipping or alteration costs
  • Or even worse…you may not receive your gown in time for the wedding!


Many of these sites or in-home dealers are NOT LEGITIMATE WATTERS DEALERS. Avoid this at all costs! They may lead you to believe that they are:

  1. A retail store, when they really are working out of their home, a P.O. Box or the trunk of their car.

    What they will tell you: They can save you money because they do not have overhead expenses by operating a store-front.

    Beware: Watters ONLY SELLS garments to full service bridal salons that can provide you the utmost in service and personal care you need. Authorized Watters retailers are known and loved for offering honest advice and delivering on their promises. They’ll help you find a dress that fits your budget and makes your day.


  2. A “buying service” that is ordering directly from Watters when they are really buying your gown through a third party.

    What they will tell you: They can save offer big discounts because they do not have to stock sample dresses.

    Beware: An authorized Watters retailer will carry samples of the Watters collections in their store for you to see, touch and try on so you know what looks good and feels good on your body.


  3. Dealing directly with Watters when in reality, you are buying from an unauthorized dealer who is selling you a counterfeit dress, or has no relationship with Watters.

    What they will tell you: They have been working with bridal gown manufacturers for years and can get you a designer gown for less than the retail price.

    Beware: They can promise you all sorts of savings. But what you don’t get is a promise that when something is wrong with the fabric, color, size, or when they miss your delivery date all together, you could be left with the stress and expense of a last minute catastrophe.

    There are also charges and services to be aware of with internet purchases, such as shipping, pressing, and unprofessional alterations. This can often cost you more than you would have paid if you bought at full price through a full service bridal salon.

    Watters retailers are professional, knowledgeable and highly trained to sell our garments. They can provide you with the best in knowledge about the necessary size, fit and alternations necessary for your gown to fit you best without spending a fortune.

    Unfortunately, not all seamstresses are experienced in bridal alternations. So when it comes down to buying and getting fitted for your dress, you’ll thank yourself by dealing directly with an authorized Watters retail store in-person.

To verify whether a particular web site or business is an authorized Watters retailer, you can visit our Store Finder or Contact Us and provide the name of the retailer, city and state.

Since this popped back up, I think I can finish my review. ๐Ÿ˜‰ My bridesmaid dresses arrived one month late, but since I told them my wedding was one month earlier than it actually was, that still gave me two months before the wedding for the girls to get their alterations.

The dresses were all beautiful and were definitely the Dessys I ordered, and all were in the right size. There was no problem with the colors. The only problem is that one dress was missing the matching sash, but they overnighted me a new one as soon as I told them.

I would probably not order my dress from them–I’d want to go to a full-service salon that will guarantee their own alterations. But I’m happy I got bridesmaid dresses from them–but can only recommend if you order VERY far in advance (I ordered six months before my wedding).

I ordered my dress from the actual House of Brides store here in Chicago. Customer service isn’t the best but they have a HUGE selection. I haven’t received my dress but I don’t anticipate any issues ๐Ÿ™‚

I decided to order my Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses online and I did look at house of Brides but I ended up going with Netbride.com.  I could not find a bad review on them and they were actually cheaper then House of Brides.  My dresses are not in yet but my BM’s say the customer service has been amazing so far.

I got my dress from HOB in Glen Ellyn, IL. I had a wonderful experience. They were so helpful and gave great ideas. my wedding is this june 2010. i ordered my dress in may of 2009 and got it in august! i think that helps a lot that i had plenty of time and wasn’t rushed. i got my bm dresses there too. i need them to match a color perfectly from my invites, and they did it!

well, I am glad for you guys Laughing  but I don´t know what to do now..whether or not oreder my wedding gown from HOB or any other online store.

I know they can be very nice, work on time, perfect condition dresses, beautiful colours, etc. I know for many of you guys what really matters is the way the dresses look and the conditions they came in.

My concern is  if I am getting a replica or an original brand…..does any of you that already have their gown look for the tag on the dress? does any of you get a certificate of authenticity of the gown? is it in your hands? that is all I am concerned about Undecided

@rutgenesis: I only ordered bridesmaid dresses, but they were authentic (what I was trying to say before ๐Ÿ™‚ with proper tags and everything. It didn’t come with a “certificate of authenticity” or anything like that–but neither did my dress, which I bought in person from a reputable bridal salon that is an authorized seller of Allure Bridals. If you go to the designer’s website, you can look up authorized retailers: check to see if House of Brides is an authorized seller of the designer (you’ll have to look in the region of their brick and mortar stores), and if it is, you can trust that it is not a replica. ๐Ÿ™‚

My experience with House of Brides has been terrible. I ordered three bridesmaid dresses on June 23 for my October 30th wedding. I was told that the dresses would arrive mid-September. After receiving nothing in mid-September I called and found out they had only gotten one of the dresses and were holding on to it waiting for the other 2 to come in. I asked that they go ahead and ship it out and they did. I have called and emailed every other day since then and I am now 10 days out from my wedding and I HAVE NOT received the other 2 dresses. Every response from the company has said the dresses should arrive shortly and they will email me once they arrive. I am now scrambling to find 2 more dresses because House of Brides will not tell me when the dresses will show up. They are shady in the way they deal with customers. The order status line directs you to a voicemail and they will only communicate with me by email. Whenever I try to trick the system to talk to an actual person the representative always has some excuse about how they can’t see everything going on with my order on their computers. It has been a huge stress and is a continuing saga. I thought I was saving money but now I’m going to have to find 2 other dresses off the rack somewhere and pay extra for alterations since it is such late notice. I do not recommend ordering from House of Brides online, unless of course you want to deal with a dress nightmare right before your wedding.

@rutgenesis:Thank you for posting this! I am so glad to see that Brides are really researching their options before buying from online “discounters” . I have had to help many brides out of a terrible situations because they didn’t get their dress in time or it came in damaged or the wrong color etc.. Plus you should really give your business to the Bridal salon that helped you with the dress or the store that provided you with the best customer service.
