Each of us owned our own house when we got engaged.  I sold my house, moved in with him, and got my name on his title.  So yes I guess we had the house before the wedding.

My sister bought a house with her BF, then the broke up, short saled the house, were out a lot of money, and now they are back together, ans she bought her own house.  That one turned out messy!

I’m not at all comfortable with owning a home with someone I’m not legally married to. I also live in a very expensive ares and buying a home with  20% down payment is a huge financial investment. We have $90,000 saved and still don’t have enough for a down payment and to have an emergency fund left.  Our mortgage will be significantly more than our rent so buying is something we’re being very cautious of.  We will be married at least two years before buying and might even *gasp* have a baby while still renting. What’s important isn’t saying you have a home but being emotionally and financially ready for it.

Hmm. I don’t see how it’s strange, but then again, we wouldn’t even consider owing for a few years. Not because of cost, but because we need the ability to pick up and move easily. Currently we rent in DC, I work in MD, and he works in VA. We live in an area that is half-way between both our jobs & since we are starting out, that could change very easily and either of us could get a new job soon, especially since he just finished his MBA and is looking to advance his career.

When we start TTC and figure out whether we will live in MD or VA (I won’t have children while living in DC) then we will buy a home. It just wouldn’t make sense to buy a home now. But we are looking forward to it as out mortgage in VA/MD will likely be less than our rent in the city 😛

We bought our house the winter of 2011 and got engaged the following October. It was so nice not having the stress of deciding between a house or our dream wedding. Our house is by no means fancy (it’s 125 years old) but it’s ours!

No, we don’t own. We rent. I’m happy with this arrangement. If we buy, we buy.

My step da literally asked me if I wanted a big fancy wedding or $10,000 for a down payment.

I didn’t even flinch. House all the way, any day.
