Yesterday, Darling Husband and I had a conversation about our original plan to have a get-together to celebrate our marriage with his family (mom, stepdad and brothers couldn’t come to our ceremony because of crap weather; his family is huge, so there were about 150 people who were not invited because we couldn’t afford it).
We’ve been really into looking at home decor and whatnot for the past few months and decided that instead of spending money on a party we don’t really want (it would have been to make his family and our friends who weren’t there feel better, mostly), we’re going to take the deposit off the venue and put what we would have spent (still would have been roughly $2-3k to feed everyone and decorate) into a CD for a downpayment on a house. We’d like to have the downpayment together within the next five years or so, but Darling Husband wants to go back to school in the near future so it may be a bit longer than that.
Besides, it’s totally more fun to think of ways to decorate the Future-House than a banquet hall! He was a little unsure about cancelling our plans at first, but agreed that it’s way more practical to save for a house.
I’ll probably still hang around for a bit since I like the community here (hopefully on home boards and whatnot, too!), but I’m basically so damn over parties. I lost interest in planning the anniversary thing about three weeks after we got married, but it took Darling Husband longer to let go of the idea, I think. Maybe I’ll even start a blog about decorating small spaces (we live in an apartment where we can’t paint the walls…boooo) and ideas for the Future-House. 🙂 We’ll see!
Just like when we decided to scrap the big wedding and elope, I think this will be the best idea ever.
