Where I live, in Ontario is surrounded by water… and there are several areas where Houseboat holidays are popular.  I have done one many many years ago… when the kids were little.  It was a ton of fun in that it was something different… sort of a cross between camping and a yachting / cruiser holiday.

Boats typically hold somewhere between 6 and 15 people… but they can certainly be “managed” by just 2 people… (ie docking… one to drive / steer, and one to man the ropes)… altho things are always easier if there are 3 or 4 people to help out with such chores.

I suggest you do A LOT OF RESEARCH… because not all waterways or companies are the same.

KNOW what you are getting… read the fine print.

And understand what requirements are needed by you… and in particular how much instruction you get on running the boat (boating is serious business… not something to be taken lightly)

Also find out what supplies are provided if you are travelling by train.  I remember when we went we had to arrange for our own bedding and food etc.

(Maybe GOOGLE to find Reviews, or go on TripAdvisor to get in touch with Destination Experts or Locals to get feedback on what they know)

Hope this helps,

PS… It was a fun holiday.  And only scary in one instance when the weather changed and a quick storm came up… which really rocked the boat !!  Based on that experience, I’d say that Houseboating is easier for a novice in a more enclosed waterway than out in the open (so for example a Canal System vs a major River or Great Lake)

I was going to say Lake Powell is very popular for house boat rentals, but that’s a bit far!
