We had our wedding in Belize. Luckily my wedding dress was chiffon and would have fit in a shoe box. All the decorating items fit in the remainder of mine and my DH. We each had one spare outfit and our swimsuits in case the check-in suitcases got delayed or lost. Don’t forget about your “personal item” you carry on. That can hold all the paper work, rings, makeup, hair stuff, etc.
We also just admitted we were going to have to check an extra bag and pay for it (we also had scuba gear!). We figured out it was cheaper to just pay for an extra bag than two over-weight bags. And after all the other costs, $40 was chump change. Our chief decorations were Chinese lanterns which fold flat when traveling and the chair sashes that folded flat and softened/protected everything around them. I didn’t take flowers because I wanted to use local.
And go ahead and be the jerk that takes up the overhead. I wore a “Bride to be” bright pink tanktop and a bright pink feather boa. I’m sure everyone understode why I had so much luggage.

Try an excess baggage company. They’re fantastic, cheaper than paying airline excess baggage and that’s how I moved all of my stuff from Australia to Amsterdam a year ago. The stuff will be delivered to the airport where you can pick it up yourself, completely insured. I had all of my treasures packed like this, just in tea chest cardboard moving boxes, wrapped in spare clothes, newspaper and bubble wrap. No breakages, and you know what flight it’s arriving on so no stressing 🙂 I’ve used http://www.sevenseasworldwide.com/ as well as http://www.worldbaggage.com.au. Google an excess baggage company in your area.

We brought literally our entire wedding (2 wedding dresses though!) minus flowers to our Destination Wedding in Turks & Caicos and I was stressed out about packing as well, but it all fit and we didn’t even max out our luggage. We brought 3 larger checked bags, 2 roller carry-on bags, a camera bag for all of our photography equipment and 1 wedding dress in a garment bag. That was all…and all of our bags were under 50 lbs each.
And we brought 100 large flower votive candles, snorkeling gear for 2, cake-toppers, jewlery and lots of extra stuff…
The hardest part was making it from the curb of the airport to the check-in for our flight.
